Hat trick in the first quarter and six total goals in Cornell's 20-7 win over Denver.

It will be very interesting to see who the first pick in the Empire summer league draft is. Tough pick between Achenbach and Hurley.

I doubt the Swarm will let Achenbach play in summer league. If I am not mistaken they didn't let Ward play last year. I could be wrong but that is what I heard through the grape vine.

Ward signed up to play, but he did not play for some reason. I think one of his captains or a league director could confirm the actual reason.

Ward did not pay his dues on the dispersal night and his spot was subsequently purchased by another player. Tough call, but we've been consistent on that point for years.

Made a big difference to his team also, because I'd be willing to bet the player they got wasn't quite the same caliber.

How do you guys run your summerleague? Are there set teams, and a pool of free agents? Or is everyone a free agent every year?

Rob or Lars can chime in but from what I understand is

2 captains on each team with the rest of the pool being free agents at the time of the draft. All players are then drafted to fill the roster spots.

We collect the first 240 names to create a draft list. Names submitted after that point go on our wait list.

2-4 weeks before the games begin, we hold a draft for 10 teams (2 captains for each team). The week before play starts we hold a dispersal evening where drafted players must come to the meeting and pay their dues - captains can pay for absent players, or players can arrange for payments to be sent to their captains in advance.

After all the payments have been collected, we offer spots to players on our wait-list who have payment ready. Waitlisted players are assigned to teams based on positional needs. Teams are allowed to trade players once everyone is paid. We usually try to have the jerseys read at the dispersal.

We do not offer partial fee options for players who might miss a few weeks.

Each team plays 9 games and we have a playoff of 1-3 weeks depending on facility availability.

I'm debating going to 12 teams and 2 sites.

Rumors are swirling of a Ward\Achenbach team. This is something which I plan to protest through official channels, as I am a defenseman.

Note to the other captains, if you draft Ward and he doesn't pay right away this year, pay the 90 bucks yourself, and then you technically own the roster spot. He'll pay you back with many goals. He looked pretty dissapointed when he showed up for the first game and was told his captains sold his spot.

Given Hurley's improvement, I'm curious if he'll go number one this year. That kid cost us a championship last year when he started trying in the fourth quarter, well that an Oz's complete lack of a left hand. I kid, I kid.

Seriously though Oz if you're out there, draft me again this year I promise I won't be quite as fat!
