WCLL Week 4 (2/16 - 2/22): Schedule, Thoughts, & Scores

Postby CATLAX MAN on Sat Feb 19, 2005 1:55 pm

This is a much better list. There are a few possibilities here as some of these high schools do play lacrosse. Not totally sure of all of these but Menlo, Campolindo, Leland, Drake, Redwood, & Acalanes, I think, all have lacrosse teams. Doubtful, though, if any high school would share their field.

The one with real potential is the City of Danville field. The fees seem pretty reasonable also. I wonder how much lead time you'd need to book a field such as this?

I know other schools can use UCSBs turf field. They just have to contact Celia Elliot. The only problem is they won't let us use the special turf paint. We have to use chalk. So if it rains, the chalk also washes away. If it rains Sunday, the UCSB v UCSD game will be on Storke field (grass). I was out there today for the womens tounament and it is one huge puddle, but we lined it Thursday, so it will work.

Is Storke in worse shape than the Pit? Didn't you have a couple players injured practicing there last year?

Just pulled this from the RMLC board:

Utah 15
ASU 11

I'm surprised that Utah won on the road against a strong ASU team. Anyone have any details from the game?

ASU was not picked in the top 10 WCLL preseason poll. They were picked to finish second to last in the WCLL south. Looks like they will finish right where predicted.

Arizona 6, Sonoma 10

Sonoma outscores Arizona 5 - 2 in the fourth to prevail in a great lacrosse game. Congrads To 'Noma.

Washington beat Cal 10-9. Cal was trailing 7-2 at the half and made a great come back. The field was sloppy and only got worse. Chico plays Washington on the same field tomorrow.

That WCLL poll was taken in September and was purely speculative, far before anyone had seen them play in tournaments or anything. I'm sure that if given the chance, you would make some changes to the poll at this point.

Also, finishing second to last in the WCLL South sounds a lot worse than it actually is when you take into account that Arizona and UCSD are above them and there are only 4 teams in the conference. I agree that they'll probably finish 3rd in the WCLL South, I just don't think that the poll you referred to is very relevant now that it's about 5 months old. In my opinion they should be given some credit for beating Mizzou.

I think there is more parity in the WCLL than I have seen over the last few years and I believe that a lot of teams are going to be strong this season. Just because a team isn't first or second in their WCLL conference doesn't inherently mean they're not a strong team.

I wouldn't read a lot into that win over Missouri as it appears that they were vastly overrated going into this year. ASU must beat UCSD to make the WCLL playoffs and, I think that may be a problem for them beating an improving Triton team. Even if they manage to pull this off, they would draw UCSB in the first round of the playoffs. After losing to an unranked Utah, the only way ASU makes the National tourney is to go on a serious run and pull of some huge upsets (AZ or UCSB). It will be an uphill battle for the Sun Devils.

Artificial Turf Fields

Postby Billax on Sat Feb 19, 2005 7:22 pm

Strykr,
You take a lot of heat on this board. But, I think you get no credit when you provide good information. Everybody else on this thread made assumptions, speculated, and relied on old data. You did the digging and, I believe, found support for jtlax's argument. The number of turf fields in NorCal has exploded over the last three years at the High School level and MANY High Schools rent their fields out as they provide a significant revenue source for hard pressed school districts. For example, the WCLL final four will be played on Miramonte's turf field.

To your list of 56 artificial turf fields in the Bay Area, add Diablo Valley Community College (DVCC), bringing the total to 57 school-based synthetic fields. I think jtlax is right. At least in the Bay Area, there should be no excuse for canceling games due to weather conditions.

Bill, you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but remember that the key is "available fields." However, if you think it is so easy to secure backup fields with less than a week's notice, then perhaps you should be offering your services to the local coaches & team administrators. If you haven't have to run a team, then you have no idea how difficult and thankless a job it is. It is just not right to criticize & second guess these people who try to make these things work in the face of insurmountable obstacles that are not under their control, which is the crux of the problem that some of us had with JT's comments. Get all the facts, not some of them.

Yes. That is why we are allowed to use it tomorrow. The only injury I could see is if someone gets sucked into the mud. There is standing water all over the field. It's far from a good field, but at least it is something.

Oh, that's great. Let's hope everyone on both teams comes through this injury free!

I notice that Charles Salemi, who started for AZ in goal last year, has not played in the 1st 2 games. Anybody know if he is playing this year or what his status is?
