SELC Week 3 (2/9/05 – 2/15/05) Discuss, Report Scores…

Apparently Tech lost by one or two to the 1986 National Champion UNC team and regularly played teams like Duke, UNC and Georgetown. I'd definitely like to get more of this info documented and written down online if I can hunt down some of those older players.

It would be great to see more specific lists of teams and years played. As of Spring '87, GA Tech was not a powerhouse. They were solid, but no more organized or talented than any of the other teams now in the SELC. GT, Alabama, Auburn, and UGA were all in roughly the same area, talent-wise. Vanderbuilt was the tops in the region because they had so many kids from up north, and everyone rooted against them.

It wasn't until Sonny and some others began to form the SELC (89 or 90?) that there was too much growth...especially in the organizational levels of the teams.

i saw that guy who takes pictures at the games at the UT UGA game and i think at the UT GT game as well.
does anyone know when and where those are posted? he was wearing a florida shirt so i dont think he was takin pics for just one team.

I agree. The late 80's were not kind to Ga Tech or any of the other collegiate club teams in the Southeast. GT played some varsity opponents back in the very early 80's. The SELC was first formed in 1988.

P.S. Georgia didn't have a team back then. They didn't join the SELC until '90, if I recall correctly.

I was a coach of the Georgia Tech Team from 1979 -1982. Please allow me to collect my thougts and research my records and I'll let you know what went with respect to lacrosse in Georgia and the southeast from the early 70's until the mid-80's.

I played at UT from the fall of 1982 thru the spring of 1994 (no eligibility entanglements in the old days). I have seen club ball at all levels through the years. When the SELC started there were probably as many non-students, as students playing. AHHH the good ole days when you could pick up a few ringers on your way to the tournament and go collect your trophy.

Not to be contrary, but I played against UGA before 1990. There was a club team in athens in 1987. Auburn played them in March '87 at the field next to a lake or something. The only reason I remember this so vividly, is that it was my first game back after a shoulder separation in January. I was out for the GA Tech game (won by Auburn) on the astrotruf in Grant Stadium (it was cool that GA Tech and UF were allowed to play on their respective varsity game fields 'cause of turf).

Alex- The ringers were great, as were the kegs on the sidelines. But I would have given a lot to play in what the teams have now.

Hugh- a different game for a different time.

I remember playing in Grant Stadium as well in 1993. Cold rainy day, GT had an attackman, Marty something, who was the back up center on the football team. Biggest lacrosse player I have ever seen, and as the only defenseman on our team over 200lbs. I got get up close and personal with Marty. We lost by 1 goal, the only blemish on the Juggernaut's perfect season.

Another reason to hate Georgia Institute of Technology.

We played a game my freshman year at UGA (87-88) I remember it well because it was the first game I actually got to go in. Of course, it was like the 6th midfield line and I got to play about the last three seconds of the game.

I just don't remember if it was Fall '87 or Spring '88.

Not Sure. I do remember your first goal at GA Tech that spring though. A cannon from the top of the box. You got drilled before it hit the net, but you were so happy you started celebrating before you got up... then the whole team mobbed ya...clutch.

I saw Vanderbilt play twice this past weekend and they are a program pn the rise. Good keeper, good depth and good athletes. They have embraced the new coaching staff and are only going to get better as the season progresses. They make some youthful mistakes and get impatient but get after you like you stole their lunch. It would be a big mistake to take them lightly. This group actually reminds me of the 1989 Commodores who won the second SELC title.
