Pinball wrote:i will say this time and time again but the B division should not be based on talent, it should be based on size of school. We are not the NCAA but the NCAA is a great and successful model that we should attempt to copy.
The reason why we are suffering growing pains is because there was not specific goal/point or "mission statment for the div b". All across the country the Div b is viewed as the little annoying brother to the big pretty schools like CSU, BYU, UCSB. In the UMLL the B division is viewed like how the NCAA views divison 3, a place for small school to thrive. There is no way that SJU would be getting the support from our school and community unless we made the B division National Championship game back to back. It also gives teams like SJU, UST, Carelton a resonable and attainable (but not easy) goal each year. Even though I thought that SJU was pretty decent and there would be no chance we could run with the big time schools like CSU and BYU.
What the b division is not is a starter league, that is what the GLLL is for.
I do want to expand the UMLL to every GLLL school out there but only if they are ready for the commitment.
Look at SJU- 5 years ago we were the laughing stock of the league and now SJU is a dominant force. That is what happens in sports, your talent level will go up and down. Look at Mankato, they have said by their own admission that they are in a rebuilding stage- should we send them down? No, should we see if the Gophers BBall team wants to play some D3 competition because they are looking to be bad again and have been for a few years? Nope.
so the real question is what does the conference do with a team like UND, new team that draws from a large public institution? I belive that they should be accepted into the b division on a probationary status with intention of moving to the correct division in 2-3 years. So guidelines need to be set and i think the league fees should be more equal.
Div A:
10,000+ undergrads
Div 1 sports (for anything, not just football)
7,000 to 10,000 enrollment -it is now the choice of the team
Div B:
7,000 or less undergrads
Division 2 or 3 sports
Premature Team who is under three years from acceptance in the league that had petitioned to get to play down.
FYI-
St. Cloud State- 14,000
UMD- 10,000
UND- 12,000
U of M- 30,000
point- 9,000
mankato- 12,000
ISU- 25,000

UND/NDSU
I have heard bits and pieces of NDSU moving to div. A b/c of D1A status and I have heard a good point made by Dylan D. about UND being in Div. A after a few years in the league. I am curious to why Pinball failed to mention the undergraduate attendance at NDSU. These two school are dead-locked (32 student diff.) as far as size. Why did pinball fail to include NDSU's class size? I predict NDSU will over take enrollment numbers over UND next year. UND is in NDSU's shadow and is following suit on the move to D1. I know very little about NDSU moving to D1A, but I do feel that both of these teams aren't close or will be close for a long time. The real question is why would UND move before NDSU?
Neither of these teams really recruit, nor is it very easy to do so, when we live 4 hrs from every single high school game. Rumor has it NDSU hit about 5 new guys from what I've heard. How did we get so high in this years pre-season pole? We sure didn't get any big names. Maybe when competitive high school lacrosse hits ND we'll move to division 1....

Same old, same old
Correct me if I'm wrong. NDSU isn't D1A they are D1AA, or now called Division I Championship Subdivision, which means they can stay and not have to move up to division A or 1, what ever you guys are calling it these days.
As for teams moving up or down, if your team feels they can compete and want to move up, then do it. Just because St. Johns and St. Thomas are good right now, doesn't mean they will be good forever. Look at them a few years ago, then look at them now. They are both some of the best teams in the country. That might change some where down the road. Then we will be talking about them moving down again. It's never ending. They don't want to move up or down, don't! Just my opinion.

NDSU is DI AA in football. They are in the final year of their 5-year reclassification period which means this is the last year they are inelligible for post season play.
This is the first year NDSU came close to surpassing UND in enrollment but they fell short by not many (32 students?).
I had a chance to speak with Tony Ghilani (NDSU Senior) last weekend and they picked up some talented kids this year. I won't comment on who or how many but it should be interesting to see what happens. It would be safe to say that this is their best class of incoming freshman.
I've riled enough feathers on this thread so I'll bow out now.
