Two powerhouses of men's NCAA Division I lacrosse will face-off in an exhibition game in Virginia Beach. Preseason #3 Virginia and #8 Navy will play on Friday night, October 5th at 7:00 pm at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.
Virginia, national champion in 2006 and this year's preseason #3, comes in with loads of young talent. Widely regarded as having the best incoming freshman class in the nation, Virginia will use this exhibition game to pit their highly touted youngsters in their first collegiate action.
Navy finished 2007 with an 11-4 record and a #7 rank in the nation, and they made the playoffs for the 4th year in a row, a streak started by their impressive 2004 run to the final game. The Midshipmen have been a lacrosse power for decades and will look to maintain that dominance this spring, their 100th season of intercollegiate lacrosse. This fall ball event will be a good chance to see some of their younger players competing for starting spots, as Navy lost half of last year's starters to graduation.
The Hampton Roads Chapter of US Lacrosse is hosting this event for the third time since 2004. The past two games have raised over $100,000. One of the main functions of the Chapter is the youth program, which has grown to over 1,600 players in the spring of 2007.
All money received from the game will go to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, a charity dedicated to helping injured Marines and their families.
Tickets will be on sale the day of the event starting at 5:00 pm. Adult admission is $8 each, students and military tickets are $5 each.
Those wishing to send donations should make their checks payable to Hampton Roads Chapter of US Lacrosse and mail them to 1373 Air Rail Avenue, Virginia Beach, VA 23455. The Chapter is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization and will send a tax donation letter upon receipt of donations.
