NEB HS: Millard West Names Will Gilner New Coach

Millard West High School has named Will Gilner as the new head coach of its boys' lacrosse team.

Gilner, 35, replaces Pat Kelsey, who led the Wildcats to a 7-6 record last season. Kelsey's career record at Millard West was 14-7.

Dang will sounds like your gonna have your hands full. Just wondering, how often do the club lax programs in omaha practice? cuz our coach and a few players are gonna try to expand the league in the near future. maybe with a little help from them Jays?

For the omaha league games are usually on sunday and the teams usually practice three to four times a week. They certainly are in the need for coaches, they have a lot of student participation, but they nee coaches to expand the league.

Ok thats not bad, hopefully we can get a bunch of our players to hop on that. We probably wont get any new teams goin this year since its so late in the game, but, were gonna go talk to a bunch of the ad's in the area and see what they thing of the idea of a lax team. So, if there are any creighton, UNL or UNO players interested in maybe helping coach a team this or next season please pm me. The thought of getting new teams started and broadening the league in omaha is a great idea, but if we dont have people willing to coach or run it, its just that, an idea.

Inquiring minds want to know how you are going to split your time between both program's practice and game schedules.

Double duty was brutal this season. My lacrosse schedule was 7 days a week with many days of high school and college doubleheaders. Fortunately, my wife is a saint and I was somehow able to stop micro-managing and learn to accept help. My Creighton staff including first year assistants Joe Meyer (who has played professionally for the New Jersey Pride and also in the NLL for a few years) and Charlie Scharini (who is a recent grad from Penn State) helped tremendously. Ron Patrick, my able assistant with the Millard West team, was always there to cover when Creighton was out of town. And thanks to the rainy weather and some lucky rescheduling I only missed one high school game all season.

The reality is that while both my Creighton Bluejays and my Millard West Wildcats had great years, each program probably suffered a little due to my commitments. I am thankful for opportunity to have coached both teams this year and I am extremely proud of their accomplishments. I have asked both programs to take a few weeks to reevaluate their respective situations, goals, expectations and needs.

Creighton has always and will always be my baby. We have come a long way from the 2003 season when the former coach quit and I took over mid-season. And we still have a lot to accomplish in the GRLC and MCLA.

I really anticipate being involved with both programs next year, but that will have to be decided by the players.

If anyone in the Omaha, NE area is interested in coaching, officiating, managing, or otherwise volunteering with the sport of lacrosse please feel free to contact me. We have openings with youth, high school and collegiate programs (both boys and girls), and we can accommodate all levels of experience.

When my family and I moved out here from the NYC Metro area, I had no expectation of lacrosse being out here, let alone a decent sized sport. After researching all that I could about lacrosse out here from Omaha to Lincoln, from KC, to St. Louis, I was so happy to know that there would be lacrosse in some fashion out here.
After seeing the level of play in most of the GRLC and then the turnout of fans and elevated skill at this High School Championship, I have felt more at home in the almost 2 years I have been out than I ever thought I would. Thanks to the GRLC, Will for the friendship and opportunity, and the great sport of lacrosse. For those of us East Coasters who woke up and found ourselves in the Midwest one day, I think we can all almost attribute out sanity to the sport of lacrosse. Seeing 300+ fans and a game that came down to 4 goals in the last minute to decide the winner by one, was truly a thing of beauty.
