A few observations and feelings from the game:
From the stands it seemed that everyone got to play. FSU played all four of their goalies. There was a good crowd and on the whole a pretty clean game. A couple of big hits but everybody's emotions seemed to be under control. A bit of an ugly game but hopefully that because of a combination of the cold, nerves, and the fact it's still fall.
UF did very well at the face-off X, they controlled the first and second quarters, but settled for a lot of bad outside shots. Their defense seemd to slide too many guys to the ball but FSU was unable to capitalize by finding the open man. At one point, an FSU player had 4 blue jerseys within 3 feet of him but was unable to take advantage. UF has a couple of quality players but always seemed to have one or two players on the field at all times who were liablilities in the offense.
FSU didn't seem to have the same fast break ability we have come to expect from them. One of the challenges for them will be to find some threats in the midfield. The seniors need to step up and not rely on the handful of younger players that have proven to be ready to compete. They just won't be deep enough otherwise. Their lack of size should also be a concern. A good number of their goals came on outside shots during EMO. The FSU guys did a nice job using high bounce shots off the turf that really seemed to throw off the Gator keeper. UF seemed content to keep their defense packed in even after 4 or 5 outside shots found the net, a mistake in my opinion.
I left the game with about 5 minutes to play but heard that FSU took some bad penalties at the end, including an unreleasable for laying on the ball that allowed UF to tie things up. Overall, I think FSU is no lock to win the SELC this year as they seemed to have fallen back to the pack.
