It's one of those things that depends on the exact wording.

There is nothing in the MDIA bylaws that forces a school to disband a club team if they add a varsity (NCAA) team.

Maybe I'm confused but couldn't have both a club team and an NCAA team, as long as they are run independently and the club team isn't labelled by the school as "varsity"?

Yeah, but they would no longer be a MDIA/MCLA team. They would be an independant team? Or does it mean that since the club was there first they can remain a part of the MDIA?

Our bylaws, as written, prohibit membership to teams at which there is a varsity team competing for an NCAA championship - regardless of which team was there first.

If SJU were to go DIII, their club team could pretty easily join the GLLC, or they could operate without affiliation and pick up games where they could.

I think a lot of the current players could and would make the team if it were DIII-this assumes they even have cuts (see the roster size of 180 for the football team at SJU). Will they immediately be an elite DIII team? Probably not. But I could see a nice program there given the help in recruiting the reputation the university has regionally.
