Laxpower ratings.

Laxpower ratings.

Postby Coach Dave on Wed Feb 16, 2005 12:52 pm

I just have a question on won/lose records being reported on Laxpower. How do they get the information for the scores and who won or lost? I see scores reported on the forum for all the games. But if you check laxpower they are missing some games. Is it just that some teams are not submitting game reports? Because if the information is not sent then there can not be a true rating of teams.

It normally takes up to a few days for all MDIA scores to get to laxpower. When I was coaching, I reported scores to Laxpower at the same time hat I filled out game reports. There is a link on the Homepage to do just that.

How accurate are the laxpower ratings right now? Because I'm not sure if Georgia has ever been ranked as high as they have us right now.

there's usually a disclaimer up there saying it takes about every team to play four or five games for the ratings to have any decent meaning.

Lax Power ratings for the most part don't really working til mid to late portion of the season once teams have some games in them and start playing same type of teams.

They don't work very well even then. Here's a prime example, the final MDIA rankings on laxpower for last year:

Rank Poll Team Rating Rank W L T

    1 2 Colorado State 84.90 6 24- 2- 0
    2 3 Brigham Young 81.93 3 13- 6- 0
    3 1 UC Santa Barbara 81.71 1 24- 1- 0

UCSB beat Colorado St. twice, BYU once, won the championship, and had the toughest strength of schedule rank and somehow finshed in 3rd in the laxpower ranking. I wouldn't put a lot of credence in their rankings.

I was not to worried about the actual rating. I just like going to one place to see who did what. Right now you have to hop from one sight to another to track down games and scores.

Hopefully all the SELC (and MDIA teams nationwide) will make use of the new system here on USLIA.com to input their schedules, scores, & stats, so we can provide all interested parties in "one stop shopping."

Many SELC teams have still failed to respond:

Laxpower uses some crazy mathematical formula to tabulate the rankings. Typically, its a pretty good indicator for general use. Matching up say the #4th and #5th team though really does no good. Also, the score predictions are usually bogus. LAXpower... not bad, but not great.

There's really no way you can tabulate and quantify so many of the intangibles that make up a team and its season. Overall, I think Laxpower does a much better job than the BCS.

Yeah, they use a similarly complicated formula in order to arrive at the wrong answer. :(
