Lacrosse has swept across the country, but until recently, it hadn't quite made it across the Cascades.

In April, the sport finally finds a home in Central Oregon.

The new Bend Lacrosse league, for boys and girls ages 6 to 15, kicks off April 2 with a demonstration match that will showcase the fast and furious nature of lacrosse. The boys squad from Portland's Oregon Episcopal School, winners of the 2004 Oregon High School Lacrosse Association championship, and the West Linn High School boys team, the 2003 state champs, will face off at a Bend-area location yet to be determined, said Rich Ekman, sports program coordinator for Bend Metro Park and Recreation District.

On April 11, actual Bend Lacrosse league practices and play begin. The season runs through June 4. Registration is set for March 7 through March 11 at the Bend park district office.

"It's a brand-new sport in Central Oregon," Ekman said. "There are no leagues on the east side of the mountains in Oregon."
