Swarm forward is passing along his passion for lacrosse
BY Jim Souhan, Star Tribune
A favorite athletic cliché is "I love this game," but as money and pressure in pro sports increase, you don't hear that so that often anymore -- unless you happen to run into a member of the Minnesota Swarm.
The Swarm is the local representative of the National Lacrosse League, the purveyor of the indoor version of the game.
Last year, the Swarm capitalized on the Wild's forced vacation and averaged an announced 10,315 fans at Xcel Energy Center. This winter, they are 1-1, having drawn 8,024 to their home opener.
I am not a disinterested party when it comes to lacrosse. I played club lacrosse at Missouri and with the old Twin Cities team, and think it is the most fun you can have without a rental boat.
Believe it or not, I'm not alone. Lacrosse, as a participatory sport, is growing at a remarkable rate.
A recent Sports Illustrated article stated that the number of youth-league lacrosse players in the United States aged 15 and under is more than 186,000, more than twice what it was in 2001.
