A Tucson high school received nearly $20,000 in donations from local and national sponsors to start the city's first school-sponsored lacrosse team.
Wal-Mart, the Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Lacrosse and the Sunnyside Unified School District donated money to pay for uniforms, participation fees and travel expenses to start a junior varsity team at Desert View High School. Though the team would be the first high-school-sponsored lacrosse team in Tucson, Sabino High School and Emily Gray Junior High have leagues funded with nonschool money.
Desert View Principal Jonathan Hanson said he's had a longtime desire to start a lacrosse team at the school.
"My sons have played the sport," he said, "and in terms of watching them enjoy it and grow in it, I thought we should get a lacrosse team here."
