Fast-break frenzy

Lacrosse continues to attract players as state looks to make it an official high school sport.

With the steamy July sun beating down, it's difficult to imagine wanting to put on layers of clothes and pounds of equipment. Especially when the hours of camp and practice won't lead to a playoff run or a state championship.

But for the athletes who attended Coral Springs High School's summer lacrosse camp, it was a chance to learn and hone their skills in one of the nation's fastest growing sports. And for them, that made it all worthwhile, even if it was a little warm.

"I've always wanted to try lacrosse and when I saw a brochure for the camp, and it fit with my schedule, I decided to come up," said Lauren Dunn, a St. Thomas Aquinas freshman. "Hopefully, I'll be able to play on a team soon."

Dunn's sentiment is one shared by a growing number of South Florida high school athletes who are discovering lacrosse. The sport, which is popular in the Northeast, is quickly spreading in South Florida, with a number of high school clubs recently taking to the field.

Coral Springs Lacrosse Club coach Dave Gray said a number of schools, including Coral Springs, Nova, Douglas and Cypress Bay have clubs, as do Pine Crest and St. Andrew's in Boca Raton. A number of schools in Miami-Dade County have joined the lacrosse frenzy and a handful of schools with clubs in Southwest Florida will mean teams in Broward will have even more potential competitors.

"I really feel like more schools will get going on this," Gray said. "And if we get the BCAA and other county organizations to notice it, maybe we can get it sanctioned. It's a great sport that people can play for life."
