Lacrosse is a sport that not many people in Greater Rome are familiar with.

But the Rome Lacrosse Club and Bagataway Lacrosse are working to change that, as they have combined to host a lacrosse camp at Darlington this week.

The camp, which wraps up today, attracted 25 boys from the first through the eighth grades and is a “Learn to Play” camp designed to teach the fundamentals of the game to novices.

“We’ve got a lot of little guys who have never played the game before,” said Tim Foote, who is the boys lacrosse coach at Darlington. “We started on Monday just introducing them to the stick and ball. On Tuesday, we put them in pads and we scrimmaged about half the time on Wednesday.

“The first question the kids have asked when they got here was, ‘When are we scrimmaging?’ They’re eating it up.”

Darlington is the only high school north of metro Atlanta to play lacrosse and Foote said he wants to help the Rome Lacrosse Club in its mission to promote the sport.
