Sure some are being excluded...those who have budget constraints that set the marginal utility of the last dollar spent so that the satisfaction derived is not equal to what they could derive from spending it on some alternative consumption good or service.
The problem here is that we are not really talking about the free market. We are talking about a monopoly that has been transferred to the organizers and the organizers have chosen to maximize their profit by attempting to garner a portion of the consumer surplus* from a group of upper middle class families in the Lamorinda area rather than setting a lower price that would allow a larger number of friends and those with personal ties to the players as well as other lacrosse fans to attend....By Sonny's logic if a marketing study were performed and the Major oil companies determined that they could maximize their Oligopoly profits by setting the price at $25.00/gallon due to the inelasticities of Demand, the budget constraints of their customers and the the consumer surplus available...then they should be able to do it. Those who are no longer able to drive have made a free choice....It is just not that simple....This is what CATLAXMAN has tried to explain that people are upset about. It is also presumptuous to believe that all families and friends of the players from the State and Private Universities involved in the tournament are all in similar upper middle class and above financial circumstances and can afford to pay the prices being charged for the tickets especially if they have large families and are coming from out of town and therefore have to pay for transportation and lodging and meals in the high cost Bay Area.

*Consumer Surplus: In more perfectly competitive markets with multiple suppliers the market not the supplier determines the price. If a supplier decides to set his price above market for an identical good or service, he will have no purchasers. Because different buyers have different budget constraints some are willing to pay far more than the price set by the interaction of supply and demand forces in the market. If I was willing to pay up to $50.00 for a pencil becuse I am relatively well off then the $49.00 difference over the market price of $1.00 is the amount of consumer surplus I derive. Because there are many pencil manufacturers no single manufacturer can influence the market price and arrogate the consumer surplus for himself.

Yes, the tournament is about the players playing in the event. I'm sure the field will be lined properly, the nets strung, referees will be assigned. How you are making a giant leap of faith from all of those things to high ticket prices is beyond me.

Sonny,

Firstly, this is the second time now that you have tried to characterize people's valid complaints about the ticket prices as somehow having some kind of effect on the teams and/or the games that are being played. No one has once said that in any post and it would be appreciated if you would refrain from misinterpreting and mischaracterizing what is being said here.

Secondly, if you think a player's aunt, uncle and two young cousins who have no interest in lacrosse but would come to see him play are gonig to drop $54 per day to do so, you are seriously miscalculating. If you don't think that this is exclusionary pricing, then I'd have to say that it is naiive at best, elitist at worst, but more realistically just plain unrealistic.

Once again, agreed.

I don't think that 15 dollars is too much for me. In fact, in time and with some counseling, I'll get over my misgivings about some of the other issues.

The valid point that I think is being missed is exactly the one that CATLAX brings up, that it's not the fans that are being excluded, it's the non-fans. Granted fans may have some reason to be irked, but personally (being a fan) I would sell my pinky toe to go and watch some good lacrosse.

The people that will be excluded are the ones that aren't interested in lacrosse, but the ones that are interested in watching (subtle difference?) their friends or family play. I'm sure attendance won't be that low, and I'm sure that there will be plenty of lacrosse fans on the sidelines.

Consider people that are traveling to see their son play. Consider a family of 4, that goes for two days.

15 (X2 tix X2 days) = $60
12 (X2 tix X2 days) = $48

that's a total of 108 dollars, which comes out to a higher cost than most motels. Personally I'll be there, with my paid ticket in hand, but I definitely see the validity of the point that the prices are high enough to start adversely affecting attendance.

Is this hypothetical family of four going to watch every game played at the tournament? I think the per game price is $8 and $6. That's cheaper than going to the movies.

Dear Posters,

I am sorry that this has taken so long for me to post an official response to these posting. This will serve as the official response from the organizing comitie of the Cal Lacrosse Boosters.

First there is some confusion here. I have gone back and looked at the posting that are on website chat boards with prices and packages is very old and has subsequently been changed many times. I do not know who provided this information to the boards but this is the correct pricing for the event.

The Prices for the WCLL event are as follows:
Adults:
$8 per game
$15 for both per day
$5 for parking (only 400 spots) free parking on the streets around the venue.

Children (High School and Bellow with ID)
$6 per game
$10 for both per day

Please take note that when we came up with the prices we compared them to a few past events.
EBAL - High School Lacrosse charges $3-$5 per team for a High School home games.
NCS - High School Playoff Lacrosse Games – East Bay $6 Marin $7
LMU last year’s WCLL host charged $10 per day & $5 for Parking
Sonoma State the year before charged $8

Is our pricing out of line with these? We think not.
If you are an adult fan of one team and you come to one game on each day you will spend $8 a day or a total of $16 for two days. If you are a supper WCLL lacrosse fan and want to see all four games on both days you will spend $15 a day or $30 total. If you are child (high school and bellow with ID) and want to see a game each day, it will be $6 per game or for a game each day or $12 total and if you want to see all 4 games it will be $20.

I hope this will clear up all the confusion that is surrounding this event. If you wish to talk to me please feel free to contact me at the phone number bellow. Otherwise I hope to see you there.

If they have no interest in lacrosse, why are they going to bother to attend the WCLL final four anyway?

If you ask that question, then I guess you never had a friend or family member attend one of your activities in your youth because they wanted to see you and support you irrespective of what the activity is.

Thank you, Steve, for clearing up some of the information on this event. The original info was found on another forum and came from the text of an email received by a Lamorinda club parent. Some of the confusion is caused by the fact that there was no official information posted anywhere.

I still have a couple of questions. You posted the following information:

Jay Costello posted this information yesterday:

Jay Costello wrote:2) $15 for 2 games and $8 for the second game only for adults
$12 for 2 games and $6 for the second game only for kids

Which of these prices are correct? Is it $12 or $10 for both days for kids? Also what is the price if someone wants to go to the first game, but not the second game?
