Wow that is 36 pts through 9 games. Looking at their stat sheet he is shooting nearly 48%. He has 14 points more than the nearest big red scorer. Very nice sophomore season for him so far. Could he be MN's first D-1 all-american? I am looking forward to the MN lakers vs. MN moose(hurleys team) scrimmage this summer.

Big Red defeats Big Green 16-11

April 12, 2008

ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore attackman Ryan Hurley registered a career-high nine points off five goals and a career-best four assists to lead the No. 5 Cornell men’s lacrosse team to a 16-11 victory over Dartmouth this afternoon on Schoellkopf Field. The win is the 650th victory in Big Red men’s lacrosse program history. It is also the 14th straight Ivy League win and 11th consecutive victory over the Big Green, as Cornell improves to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play. Dartmouth falls to 4-6 overall and 0-3 in the league.

In addition to Hurley’s outstanding game, Max Seibald registered three goals and one assist, while John Glynn added four assists for four points each. Chris Finn and John Espey chipped in three goals each, while Chris Ritchie tallied two goals and Rocco Romero handed out two assists.

Dartmouth was led by Josh Gillam’s six goals and Brian Koch’s five points off two goals and three assists. Ari Sussman also registered two goals and two assists for the Big Green.

The Big Red held the slight advantage in shots, 36-34, but Dartmouth had a rare edge in ground balls, 35-30. Cornell won 17-of-31 face-offs with Tommy Schmicker winning 8-of-13 and Glynn earning 7-of-14 restarts. Glynn also picked up a game-high eight ground balls.

Cornell scored on 4-of-6 extra-man opportunities and held Dartmouth scoreless on two attempts.

In goal, Jake Myers had a solid outing with 10 saves to earn the win, while Michael Novosel stopped eight in the loss.

After winning the opening face-off, Dartmouth couldn’t capitalize and turned the ball over. Cornell took the ball on the end line and a heads-up play by Andrew MacDonald found Romero streaking towards the goal. The junior midfielder drew the defensive slide and then fed Ritchie on the doorstep to put Cornell up, 1-0 just over one minute into the contest.

The Big Red ran the score to 2-0 at the 12:28 mark when Hurley took the ball on the right wing, dodged past his man and beat Novosel down low.

Hurley found the back of the net again just over three minutes later as he took a pass from Seibald in stride, rolled around the goal put Cornell up, 3-0.

Dartmouth got on the board with back-to-back goals from Tim Daniels and Koch to make it a 3-2 game with 4:33 remaining in the first quarter. Daniels was a blast from 15-yards out, while Koch’s ball found Myers’ stick and barely trickled over the goal line.

A great individual effort by Finn restored the momentum to Cornell as he battled through his defender and ripped a shot over Novosel’s left shoulder to put the Big Red up, 4-2 at the 3:22 mark.

The two-goal advantage was short-lived, however, as Gillam scored off a pass from Koch to pull the visitors within one.

Cornell restored its two-goal advantage with just over one minute to play in the quarter when Glynn sent a pass to Finn and the junior attackman scored a brilliant behind-the-back goal while diving across the mouth of the cage to send the Big Red into the first intermission with the 5-3 lead.

The home team extended its lead to 6-3 just two minutes into the second quarter when Glynn sent a pass to Hurley, who was all alone in front of the net and beat Novosel up high.

Espey found the back of the net just three minutes later when he drove down the left side of the crease and whipped a shot from 15 yards out into the lower right hand corner of the goal to make it a 7-3 game with 9:58 to play in the half.

Simultaneous Dartmouth penalties, one for one minute and one for 30 seconds, gave the Big Red a two-man advantage for 30 seconds, but a wide shot gave the ball to Dartmouth. The Big Green, however, could not kill both penalties and before returning to full strength, Seibald ripped a shot from dead-center 15-yards out past Novosel’s feet to make it an 8-3 game at the 8:16 mark.

Gillam ended the four-goal Cornell run when he took a pass from Sussman on the door step of the crease, faked Myers and found the back of the net.

With time winding down in the second half, the Big Red got flagged for a 30-second penalty, but the man down defense was up to the task and Cornell entered half time with an 8-4 lead.

Another man-up goal by Seibald, a near carbon-copy of his goal at the end the second quarter, opened the scoring in the third stanza, putting the Big Red up, 9-4 at the 14:06 mark.

Dartmouth answered right back, as Chad Gaudet won the en suing face-off and dished off to Sussman, who scored his first goal of the day to make it a 9-5 contest.

The fast-paced scoring continued when Hurley registered his fourth goal of the game just 40 seconds later off a pass from Romero, beating Novosel over his right shoulder.

Espey and Seibald pushed the Cornell lead to 12-5 with back-to-back goals in a span of 1:27, as both converted from deep on low, hard shots.

Once again, Gillam ended the Big Red scoring run with three-straight goals in a span of 50 seconds to make it a 12-8 game at the 7:00 mark. After registering an unassisted goal, Gillam’s next two came off passes from Koch. The first was the direct result of a Big Red turnover, as Koch found Gillam parked all alone on the crease. The second came after the Big Green won the restart and Koch hit Gillam in stride as he streaked in front of the cage and one-timed it into the net.

After four scoreless minutes, Dartmouth found itself with a prolonged offensive possession, but two solid saves by Myers helped return some momentum to the Big Red and a trip on the other end gave Cornell a one-minute man-up opportunity, which it converted when Espey took a pass from Hurley and sent a shot into the upper corner of the goal to make it a 13-8 advantage with 1:18 left in the quarter.

Dartmouth scored the final goal of the third quarter and the first goal of the fourth quarter to make it a three-goal game, 13-10, with just 14:46 remaining in the contest.

Cornell ended the Dartmouth scoring run when Glynn threaded the ball through several Big Green defenders and hit Hurley right in front of the cage, where he turned and fired the ball past Novosel to make it a 14-10 game with 12:42 left to play.

Hurley set up the next goal as he rolled behind the cage and hit Ritchie, who was on the right side of the crease and found the back of the net to push the Cornell lead back to 15-10 with just over 11 minutes remaining.

A man-up goal by Finn, who managed to get off a shot despite being knocked to the ground, extended Cornell’s lead to 16-10 at the 9:19 mark.

Neither team scored again for over seven minutes before Sussman broke the stalemate with a great individual effort as he rolled around the cage, fought off a defender and beat Myers up high.

A slashing penalty gave Dartmouth a man-up opportunity for the final 30 seconds of the game, but the Big Green could not convert and Cornell took the 16-11 victory.

The Big Red travels to Princeton next weekend to take on the Tigers in front of a nationwide audience on ESPNU at Princeton Stadium at 4 p.m. Since Ivy League play began in 1956, Cornell and Princeton have dominated their conference foes and racked up most of the conference hardware. Between the two squads, they have won at least a share of all but 10 Ivy League titles. Likewise, the two teams have won at least a share of the past 13 conference crowns.
