NCAA to Admit Canadian Teams, Could MCLA Follow Suit?

Postby Dan Wishengrad on Tue Jan 15, 2008 8:33 am

USA Today reports that the NCAA is set to begin admitting Canadian teams, including UBC, for the first time:

Could this serve as a precedent for us to follow suit? There has been interest from UBC (among others) in joining our ranks in the recent past , but this has always been met with resistance. As a charter member of the PNCLL, Simon Fraser was "grandfathered" into our organization as a special, unique case. But lacrosse is huge north of the border, and the admittance of some additional Canadian teams could be a boon for the MCLA.

As Sonny has been known to say, "reading is fundamental"...

On a related note, with the new border requirements dealing with passports, does every member of Simon Fraser need a passport, as well as all members of teams travelling to play them?

Yes they do. We almost couldn't go over a couple years ago cause some guys on our team forgot them. And now they are even more strict.

????? Aren't the passport guidelines new? Meaning, before you only had to have a drivers license (and sometimes a birth certificate).

I think having a passport is reasonable considering it will cost you around $.75 a month.

yeah they are new, but they have recommended them for the past couple of years. That is why I said almost couldn't go. But we were a bunch of stinky guys with gear in 12 person vans, border guys don't really know how to react to that. Especially when we tell them we are coming into THEIR country to beat one of THEIR teams in THEIR national sport.

Getting into Canada is not nearly the hassle of coming back not the U.S.
That's where the restrictions are getting much tighter.

Washington State now has new high-security driver's licenses that they are going to accept at the border. . .even without a birth certificate. I'm guessing other states will also have higher-security IDs that they will issue.

We haven't really had problems with the border crossing as a league. . .and hopefully '08 will be no different.

We are recommending passports or a driver's license with certified birth certificate for every player in our D1 this season. None of our D2 teams will be crossing the border in 2008.
