MCLA's Future Goals

After reading about Sonoma State's coach saying that he never coached club lacrosse, that he only coached virtual varsity. Would it ever be possible that the MCLA could be a varsity league that is outside of the NCAA.

I also read about how Cal Berkley's Club Rugby team was actually a varsity team within their athletics, but not NCAA. Would this not affect title 9? Is title 9 just an NCAA issue for colleges?

How great could it be if college athletic departments could add on lacrosse by:

1) not having to pay much for the program, have the kids pay dues.

2) Not have to deal with the issue of title 9.

Tell me if I am completely out of whack here, or if this could be a possibility down the road??

Unfortunately, you're completely out of whack. Even if a team is completely supported by outside means, it still counts toward Title IX numbers if it's part of the athletic department.

There are varsity programs outside of the NCAA. Men's crew, for example. Many schools offer it as a varsity sport, but the NCAA only sponsors women's crew.

Ah, I was afraid you were going to say that. So how does programs like Sonoma, Michigan, and Lindenwood work then? Isn't your programs part of the athletic department?

Lindenwood is a private, NAIA school. As I understand it, Title IX doesn't apply to them. Only public schools that accept federal funds.

Lindenwood is an NAIA institution, Title IX does not affect us like it would an NCAA school.

I thought "Federal funds" included grants and tuition assistance programs, therefore T9 could extend to private colleges and universities.

Title IX does include private schools, just as it does public schools. Exactly right - because they use federal money for grants, scholarships and many other things. As long as they use $1 of federal money, they have to comply. It has absolutely nothing to do with NAIA vs. NCAA. Title IX is not an NCAA mandate. It's a federal government mandate.

At Michigan, we are still officially part of the Recreational Sports Department. While we get some athletic department support, our budget runs 100% through rec. sports. Plus, the varsity club program here is Title IX balanced with two men's teams and three women's teams.

Technically, even club sports fall under Title IX. You just haven't seen anyone challenge support levels for college club teams in court yet, so universities don't pay much attention.

That, my friends, is a very scary thought. Most sports clubs are funded through student fees. The idea that the federal government is going to micro-manage that from Washington through Title IX is mind-blowing.

In scouring the net for Title IX information, I came across the "College Sports Council." Seems that that Title IX reform is one of their major issues. Does anyone know anything about them?

It's not new news though. It's been around since 1972. Title IX encompasses a lot of things. It's original intention was to ensure equal educational opportunities...at all levels. It applies to community recreational departments (because the cities that fund them get federal money), high schools and colleges in and out of the classroom, and many other things. Public awareness is hightened around college sports because that's where most of the media attention has focused. In fact, college sports is just a very small part of what Title IX covers.

The CSC that LaxTchr mentions above has been around a long time. It was started by a lobbying group for college wrestling (a ton of wrestling programs have been cut). They made the most noise a few years ago when they tried to have their position reach the Supreme Court. The Court refused their motion to change Title IX.

A couple of years ago the current federal administration formed a committee to re-examine Title IX to see if changes should be made. They spent about a year holding private and public forums to get input, and they ultimately decided that no major changes were needed. Keep in mind that this was coming from a very conservative administration.

I'm as frustrated by Title IX's effects on lacrosse as anyone, but there is zero momentum to change it. All the usual arguments (take football out of the equation, get rid of quotas, etc.) are not really possible or relevent.
