USA West

Just got a note forwarded to me (originally from Steve Dini) about this year's USA West team, as follows:

Just got off the phone with Coach Broschart, and he let me know that the team just won the Berlin Open. We only had a quick conversation but they beat USA California in the Semi Finals by 3 goals and they beat Prolaxshop by 1 in the final game! I guess Prolaxshop was made up of mostly UK national team players that played Div. II & III lacrosse in the states. Brekan Kohlitz, midfielder for USA West was named tournament MVP, he took all the teams face-offs and I from what the coach told me he just owned the center X all tournament. Next up the team will have two days off before they start up the Prague Cup on Wednesday.

This year's team is being coached by Coaches Kerwin (Oregon and now NDNU), Broschart (Arizona) and Hopkins (ASU - formerly now). As usual it features mostly MCLA players.

too bad this team isn't more widely represented by the MCLA, by the looks of it it is mostly 3 or 4 teams represented.

Brian Schatz (#5) of Northeastern is on Team California. Are there any other MCLA guys on that team?? I didn't recognize many of the names.

It was not intended to widely represent the MCLA, hence the name USA West. This is a regional team that goes abroad every summer with a group of players from the West. The players are largely chosen by the coaches that are attending, hence the heavy concentration of AZ, AZ State, & Oregon players.

Quote Directly from the USA West Lacrosse Website
"USA West lacrosse was established in 1999 to give lacrosse players from non-traditional lacrosse regions an opportunity to play at the highest international level. USA West Lacrosse promotes lacrosse players from outside of the traditional hotbeds of the sport. Athletes eligible for selection are elite-level USLIA players, NCAA players from select varsity programs in Western conferences and locales, and NCAA players at Eastern varsity programs who played high school lacrosse in the West."

Unless I am mistaken, but isn't this what we would discribe most of the MCLA teams out there.

UMD, Michigan, and CSU guys have all gone, and they aren't exactly what I'd call from out west.

I am not trying to hate on the team, I'd just like to see a team of the most talented guys from outside the tradational hotbeds (east).

From what I have noticed, and I think it has been mentioned here, the team is primarily composed of players from the schools of the coaching staffs. This is understandable, since there is not alot of time for tryouts, and it is kind of hard coming up with a tryout location. It is easier to just go with players the coaches know. That being said, if a team wants some of their players on the team, the simplest way I can see of making this happen, would be to Call Steve Dini(who I believe runs the team) and volunteer members of your coaching staff to help out.

Is there any web site I can go to to check out the stats from the tournaments they are playing in? I wish I were there playing with my boys from Oregon but I am stuck here in Greece with my family instead...haha...not a bad little trade-off.

I just got done with 12 hours of class, I don't want to read usawest.com, could someone tell me if you need to be a senior to be eligible? If not, why doesn't this team look more like the 1st AA? ie. look at the goalies...Launert would have been nice to have I bet?
