CollegeLax Video Site

So we have been ruminating on the idea of a video-based site or extension to collegelax, and I think the best way to get it going is to seed it with archives of old games. This thread is to get a feel of what exactly is out there.

So basically I am looking for old game films or anything that we could use to create an MCLA video repository. After getting it started, users would be allowed to upload their own videos, similar to YouTube, but in a more topical and local network (the collegelax family of sites) where we would have more control than an outside entity such as YouTube.

I am more than willing to digitize and upload the videos, so what I am looking for is for anyone who is willing to mail me old game films or dvds, or even digitize and upload them to a website for me if you would rather do it yourself.

Again, this is only to get feedback, as I am still researching and learning about the hardware and software needed for a proper video hosting environment.

Please post what you have available for videos as a response. Thanks.

I've got some UCSB videos from years 2002 - 2004. I've also got the full game from the championship game in Blaine (SB vs. Sonoma)

That would be outstanding. To my knowledge there is very little game film here at Marquette, but I will research to see if I can find any. However, games in the future will hopefully be videotaped so we would have more to contribute if this idea were to come to fruition.

OAKS,

I'm not sure how BYU might feel about it, but you might be able to get some of the BYUTv games from the past few years. It certainly would be worth a try.

Coach Ojeda,

Would you have any programming background here to help build a YouTube like video section of CollegeLAX?

That would be a little out of my league at this juncture, but I might be able to help build that done the road. If it is something we are serious about, I can do the research and learn some of it to build it. As our developers always say, with time, nothing is impossible :D

Definitely serious about it. Let me know how exactly you think we should proceed.

Yeah, that would be amazing, as I have little to no extra time to spend. I have already been researching and looking as the company I am working for is working with video, so if you'd like some info, shoot me a pm or give me a call.

The best place to start is probably ffmpeg - http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/ for the on-the-fly video conversion on the server. It's free, and you can actually do the whole thing with open source or free products.

How large of files are we talking about here, because I have some DVD's of our past games. Like could we upload a full game? Not sure the capacity of the system you are dreaming up here? But sounds like a great idea.

I could probably start looking at this end of June/July. I have some work commitments and other volunteer commitments that will keep me busy throughout June. After that though, I would be more than willing to dive in and help out.

Thanks for the information Will. I will play with that and see how it works.

Before you bite off too much to chew....

What exactly do you think is involved?
What type of scalable platform do you think we should try to work on?
etc...

Good Point. Let me research a little bit and get back to you about what I think is involved and the platform we should use, etc.

This article looks like a good way to go for a video section.

We could also leverage the code from this open source "youtube" already created here http://demo.rohanpinto.com./

Seems to me these are built off the same platforms as the forum and likely the rest of the site. We could obviously tweak it to fit our needs, but just seems to be a good starting point for our application.

Just some thoughts. The demo code is not currently available, but if we contact them I am sure we could get a copy of the source code, and then provide them with any updates we do as contributions to their project if we were so inclined.
