Grad student coaches

Postby Arklax on Wed Feb 07, 2007 2:34 am

Not sure what forum this may go in...

I'm considering putting a proposal together to try and get my university to assist in paying for my grad school under the condition that I stay with the team and help coach/manage the team. I would like to talk with any coach/assistant coach who has something like this worked out with their university, where, in exchange for coaching, the student has a partial/full tuiton waiver. Please pm me if you have any experience with this. Thanks.

Ask UCSB. One of their players got credits for being the team travel coordinator.

It was, of course, most interesting that these credits mysteriously appeared when an investigation showed this player below 12 hours which threatened the teams postseason eligibility.

I have that set up here at Lindenwood as a GA.

Mark Bates at Harding has something similar if I'm not mistaken (I dont know his full deal).

I'm sure there are a ton of similar situations out there.

I think it is a great idea, especially if your University is willing to support the program. I am working on a PhD here at Idaho and my coaching appointment is 100% volunteer. My assistant coach and I hope to build a program with paid positions over the next couple of years but currently we just use the time as a release from our programs. Having a paid system in place would most likely ensure long-term security/survivability for the program.

Good luck!

I heard a rumor that St. Olaf is starting to let students who coach or do some other needed work for a club team count that as student work. I am not fully sure on how it is set up.
