graduating form "League" to "Conference"

Postby TheNino57 on Mon Nov 20, 2006 1:36 pm

I asked this question a couple of years ago. But in light of the newly formed MCLA, I will pose it again. In order to avoid a little confusion and to appropriately represent the MCLA, should conferences change their name from "League" to "Conference?" An example of this would be the PNCLL would change from "Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League" to "Pacific Northwest Conferences." I also think that adding the words "lacrosse," "college," or "collegiate" is a bit redundant since it is already implied by the MCLA. None of the conferences are independent leagues anymore, they are all conferences under the MCLA banner. Didn't the RMLC make this change a few years ago?

Yes. The RMILL changed to the RMLC.

what's the point-The NCAA has the Patriot League and Atlantic Coast Conference (with 4 teams)-who cares what we call our local affilitations as long as they all play by the same rules. I don't think the LSA wants to change their name, well at least not the TX schools.

There has been some rumblings occasionally about the idea of changing the name of the LSA.....but not because it ends in "Alliance" instead of "conference". I guess their thinking is that since the league doesn't encompass Texas alone, it should be changed to something that includes Oklahoma and Louisiana as well. Maybe something like the Deep South Conference. I really haven't been around long enough to know too much about it however, so who knows if it would ever happen.

I think that consistency goes a long way. Many in the lacrosse world are in some way connected to US Lacrosse either through a chapter membership or magazine subscription. As of late, US Lacrosse has advertised "one for all" as their motto. I think it works. Right now we are demonstrating diversity in our titles ... some with Conference some with League, Alliance or Association.

CCLA
LSA

GRLC
RMLC
SELC

PNCLL
PCLL
UMLL
WCLL

I for one would like to see either the PCLL or the PNCLL change because they are only separated by an N.

I don't really have a problem with the Lone Star Alliance, I mostly have a problem with conference names like mine, the PNCLL. It doesn't make sense to me why our conference maintains the "League" moniker since we are no longer an independent league. To me, PNC (Pacific Northwest Conference) or PNLC (Pacific Northwest Lacrosse Conference) makes much more sense (it is also easier to say) since whenever anyone, to my knowledge, refers to said conference, the conversation is revolving around MCLA lacrosse and thus, collegiate lacrosse is implied. That being said, since every conference other than the LSA includes the word lacrosse at some point in their titles, perhaps the word lacrosse can stay.

Central Collegiate Lacrosse Association becomes:
Central Lacrosse Conference (CLC)

Pioneer Collegiate Lacrosse League becomes:
Pioneer Lacrosse Conference (PLC)

Upper Midwest Lacrosse League becomes:
Upper Midwest Lacrosse Conference (UMLC)

Western Collegiate Lacrosse League becomes:
Western Lacrosse Conference (WLC)

I agree. The Lone Star Alliance needs to upgrade it's name for sure. An exclusive name like that doesn't represent all of the other teams that compete in that area. Perhaps a name like the Dust Bowl Conference or Gulf States Conference would be more suitable...

Maybe the TALC... Tornado Alley Lacrosse Conference. It would encompass all those states previously mentioned and maybe a few others. It would have room to grow with "lower" midwest lax expansion. :D

Sadly, I think this was one of the names among the 20 or so that were kicked around when the GRLC was starting up.

TALC would be a pretty sweet conference name, all jokes aside. It's definately unique.

I have to admit, I haven't put a lot of thought into this. However, the points are valid that the conferences are not "leagues". The CCLA with the "association" tag is a little more straight forward. With the national governing body name changing 3 times in the past 3.5 years this compounds the issue. Especially when speaking with potential highschool players (and recruits, parents, highschool coaches, at camps) and trying to explain the dynamic of the national scene. It can all get muddled very quickly.

dont know if it makes a difference to this discussion, but isnt keeping the "college" or "collegiate" portion important to separate between the mens/high school league. i know that the high school league in texas is not sponsored by the UIL (the high school scholastic sports governing body). and the men/women are governed by the SWLA, which doesnt distinguish between anyone.
peace.

That's your opinion. I personally think it sounds like a glorified bowling league name.
