Denver, CO – Colorado Mammoth head coach Gary Gait and general manager Steve Govett will assume their respective duties for Team Canada’s entry in the 2007 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship.
The International Lacrosse Federation’s indoor championship, which features the world’s top eight teams and takes place every four years, will be held May 14-20 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The event begins immediately after the conclusion of the 2007 National Lacrosse League playoffs.
“The Canadian national team management committee is very excited to have Steve join our group to share his lacrosse knowledge, leadership and organizational skills, and selecting Gary as head coach of the team was just another natural progression for Gary’s career in lacrosse,” Team Canada chairman Johnny Mouradian said. “Canada is very proud of both Steve and Gary’s lacrosse accomplishments and now we have the luxury of having both gentlemen take our program to the world tournament.”
Gait, a native of Victoria, British Columbia, captained Team Canada to the gold medal in the World Field Lacrosse Championship last summer. He did not participate in Team Canada’s victory at the inaugural indoor championship in 2003.
Govett, a native of Burnaby, British Columbia, and a citizen of both Canada and the United States, played for Team Canada in the field championship in 1994 and 1998. He was general manager of Team USA’s 2003 entry in the indoor championship.
“It’s an honor and a privilege for both Gary and I to be a part of Team Canada for this event,” Govett said. “We’re both looking forward to the challenge of building a world championship team and participating in this unique and exciting tournament.”
