I know we had this discussion on the old message board.... But I'm about to purchase some UA shirts. (Mostly for wearing underneath referee shirts.)

What is the difference, if anything, between HeatGear, AllSeasonGear, & ColdGear UA shirts? Hailing from Atlanta, I probably don't need the ColdGear for the few weeks that we have cold. (I understand the TurfGear is supposedly reinforced for playing on artificial surfaces. Don't need that.)

Also does anyone know the difference between the regular UA shirts and the "metal" shirts?

For referee purposes I would go with the Grey loose gear. It still gets rid of the sweat really fast and is comfortable and really light.

The heat gear fits really tight and may be constricting if you don't get the right size. Its really good under pads though.

I find turf gear to be good for keeping warm when its too cold for short sleeves but not cold enough for cold gear. Its pretty thin but covers your arms where the heat gear doesn't.

We are supposed to wear black shirts under our referee shirts. Not white or grey.

Has anyone bought/worn/compared the AllSeasonGear vs. the HeatGear shirts?

i wear the cold gear underneath my referee uniform here in TX for HS soccer games, which is played in the winter. it works really well while you are running around and lasts for about a year. but after you stop running and youve used the shirt for a while, it gets really cold on your back when the water/sweat is sticking to your back. i dont know if thats from using it too much and the magic is gone away or if its just from coming down after the game. there is considerably more running involved for a soccer ref than a lax ref also.

i use the loose gear in the summertime and it feels good. it pulls the water/sweat away from your body and acts as a coolant when it touches your skin while wet. ive had mine for about 4 years and they still work fine. it is really light and it doesnt effect you if you by the wrong size or gain weight cuz there is norestriction in the fit if its loose.

a little info here-when Ua was first trying to figure out waht it was doing, it tried a couple of things. The Arizona State FB team needed a cold weather garmet for some bowl game theywere playing in the late 1990's, when UA was still in its infancy. They came out with what they wanted to be theri new cold gear line. It was not thick enough and it turned out that ASU wanted something thicker. UA tried again and got what they now call Cold Gear. The orignal stuff is now called All Season. The only difference between the two is the thickness. Turf geat usually has some non stick areas to help with FB players griping the ball. Like Jesse said-For places like TX and GA, Cold Gear is definiely overkill. I wore all season gear under a football jersey and stood in the snow at the 2000 Independence Bowl and was just fine. Go with the black All season gear (it's cheaper too). Heat Gear is nice for hot weather, but it's true calling is one of those under shirts for under equiptment, with scrapes and schafing and all. It works fine for that, and as an undergarmet. But, as a ref, if you don't need/want the compression, loose gear will also work the same way.

I am a fan of the loose gear since I do not like having clothes tight on my body. I have used it in some games that I have officiated, and it has worked well. It is all personal preference.

I have 2 of each, cold gear and heat gear. The heat gear definitely takes some getting used to because of the tight fit, but once you adjust to it, it works really well. To me, anything below 80 degrees is cold so I really like the cold gear. Honestly, until you get down into the 40's or low 50's, the cold gear will be too hot, but if you need it, it is great. Plus, you can wear it under sweaters when you're just going out for other purposes.

Sonny, if you have to wear white or black, I think that UA makes some loose fitting stuff in other colors than grey. I know that Lindenwood had some sweet stuff that was loose and old gold color, might want to ask Troy where he got it.

they make the loose fitting in every color almost imaginable. I know they have the performance grey which looks like a regular grey t-shirt. But the loose gear is in almost any color.

The all season gear is great in temps in the mid 40's-50's. I have found it great in the south hear where sometimes it may drop down that you want to wear long sleeves. Also is in the mock turtleneck which is kind of a nice feature.

Also for some of the cold days that we have gotten this year in NC, I have found that the UA cold gear snow shirt is great. It has the heat gear vents on the side to get some extra ventalation. Great stuff, but hard to find, cause i don't think they make it anymore

I have a heat gear that I like to wear, but I also have some imitation Wal-Mart brand one -- I got tired of having the comfortable black t-shirts fade and dry slowly, and the color seems to last longer (and dries quickly). Now if I can get my hat to stop smelling .... (I've used dryer sheets, washing them seems to make them only suitable for high school games).

When I reffed up in DC, I worked so much that the hat was unbearable. The thing that worked best was to buy a plastic hat form, and throw it in the dishwasher. The hat kept its pcrisp appearance better then running it through the laundry.

I also broke down and got another hat.

Reffing in Minnesota and Michigan we have different needs! Outdoor college games in March can be brutal sometimes. My cold weather gear is a set of Patagonia polypropylene underwear with a zip-up turtleneck top.
Thin and very warm. Lined supplex black pants are the only way to go for pants - they're warm and quiet! I then have a quilted ref's jacket and I'm ready to go. I also found a sweet set of winter golf gloves that have a thin leather palm and fleece back and they were only $12.
I also have a Heat Gear shirt for the end-of-season games when we thankfully need it. Tight-fitting for sure, especially packing as much as I do into it! Last year, the Detroit Lax Company had a great deal for refs on a loose-fitting Warrior shirt - $10! Thanks guys, a great deal.
