I'm curious, who does everyone think the greatest lacrosse player of all time is, and why?

Gary Gait. Redefined the game - size to dominate and incredible stick skills. Some might say Jim Brown - he redefined the rules! No longer could you pin your stick to your chest and just steamroll down the field. Can you imagine being on defense and seeing that load coming at you? Yikes!

I would just start taking swings at his chest saying i was going for the head of the stick. He would probably think twice after he breaks a few ribs.

Jim Brown is my vote for offensive Player of all time. But defensively, What about Dave Pietramala-sp? He is someone who has changed the entire structure of the modern lacrosse game. Pretty sick d-man, even sicker coach.

Yeah, Pietramala and Gary Gait get my votes. I believe Pietramala even guarded Gait...not sure who had the upper hand. I do know that Pietramala scored somehwere in the range of 15 goals his senior season at Hopkins. That is absurd!

There was a lax magazine article last year or so that had this to say:
greatest athlete to play lacrosse: Jim Bown
greatest lacrosse player: Gary Gait

here is another question we may relate to a bit better... who is the best club lacrosse player of all time?

Much harder question, since most people won't remember the big-time players from the 80s and 90s. Of recent memory...Steve Austin, Mark Plonkey, Will Patton, Chris and Kevin Moon, Rob Warner, Peter Morgan, Nick Dean...list could go on and on. I think it would be hard to find a consensus on who the best club player of all time is.

Best Club Player: Mark Plonkey
The only player that I know of that had fan's chant his name in hatred. He was just nasty. I remember watching him at nationals my freshman year. He was a huge reason why CSU beat Michigan in the 2004 National Championships. Best LSM I have ever seen.

Best lacrosse player ever, club or NCAA: Justin Combs. Just kidding, maybe when he's a senior, though. As a goalie, I'll say Sal LoCascio. He was big, but quick as can be.

As much as I love jim brown, he hasn't seen a stick in 40 years and since then the game has progressed so much. You really think that he's the best player of ALL time??
Gait, Millon, Pietramala (although Lee Zink is my fav d-man).

Air Gait- hands down.
I recalled Rob Graff telling me that Petro bested Gary Gait in a collegiate game. Petro from what I have read in many sources is considered the best d'man. That discussion was in Lacrosse listserv many, many years ago. That question was brought up similar to this discussion.
