Academic Eligibility

My son is trying out for a team in the USLIA. He is on academic probation with a 1.8. His school has no rule against playing while on academic probation. Does the USLIA have a rule making students ineligible to play when they are on academic probation? Is there any way around it? Is he eligible to play? :?:

We do not have a minimum gpa rule or a rule about academic probation. If the registrar certifies that he's taking at least 12 credits, and he's played less than 4 years of college lacrosse, then he's eligible.

It is possible, however, that the conference he plays in, or the school he plays for, may have more restrictive rules related to academic performance.

Since eligibility has been brought up and the old discussions about this have been lost...what is the ruling on a player that only plays three years but returns to play his fourth year when he is in grad school? Was there a rule that you have to play four years within five years or is it just that you have four years of eligibility to play whenever, as long as you are playing for the same school?

If i remember correctly it was you have 4 years to play within a 6 year span, but i could be wrong.

Also the graduate school has to be the same as the one the player went to undergraduate school at.

There is no time limit. It must be at the school where you received your undergraduate degree, but there is no five or six year cap.

really, there is no cap in year? I know in the NCAA you only have a certain number of years once you start to use your eligibility.

so are you saying that a 40 year old man can come back to the school in which he received his undergraduate degree and played 3 years of lacrosse and have 1 year of eligibility left? this doesn't seem right. i thought there was a 4 seasons in 6 years rule or something like that.

They haven't finalized the 6 years to play 4. They were close a couple years ago if I remember correctly. Teams like BYU where people go on 2 year missions are some of the few problems they have. But for right now, that 40 year old could come back and play.

It was almost instituted this year, but the BOD decided that from an administrative standpoint, it would be impossible to monitor. It was supposed to be 6 to play 4. Probably in the future it will become a reality I assume.

With the new roster and certification on the site, this won't be a problem in the future!

However, this site is no longer an official part of the MDIA. Legally I do not think we can use the site to conduct league business (i.e. checking rosters for eligibility). I think that, with the scope of our league, and the limited personnel to administrate, the internet is going to be the best way to oversee the whole thing. Of course this site seems to be the logical way to go. As the MDIA continues to streamline its activities I hope they reconsider using this site (or some form of it) as an authorized tool.

That is unless Sonny decides to take his ball and go home. :)

it's not this site.... the site we use, and it sounds like we're just testing this year, is associated with the USLIA.... :D

Apparently the WCLL has a "12/24" rule. This is how it is listed on the WCLL website.
1. The following eligibility rules are approved for the 2004-05 season:

1. 12/24 rule except for freshman (freshman is a player with no prior college work prior to academic year of season and the "24" will be based on the last two full-time semesters).
2. must be matriculated and enrolled for 12 units at institution at which player is playing for every term during the season. If a player is found in later years to have not been eligible during the previous season of play the team will forfeit all the games that player played in and may suffer other penalties as determined by the Board of Directors or League.
3. can't play more than four years of collegiate lacrossed. Graduate students may play for only one year, if they are eligible under 'a' and 'c' above; earned their undergraduate degree at, and are enrolled for 12 units in the institution at which they are playing; and had no break between their undergraduate and graduate studies.

This rule means that a player must have 24 credits in the last 2 full semesters or quarters before the season.
UCSB lost a starting attackman because he failed (incomplete) a class last spring and did not make it up before the season started (this fall). A few other players around the league were also ineligible due to this rule. I don't think other leagues have this rule and I see no purpose for it's existance. What is the purpose, to force players to graduate in 4 years?

bband,

The new administrative site, which is owned and run by the MDIA, is already up and running at www.uslmdia.org/admin. It is being used for team applications/information, official roster tracking and eligibility. For now, it is administrative only - no public access or features. It will eventually have a game reporting feature and some public features - perhaps next season. We'll also incorporate some of our own web content with the US Lacrosse website. Sonny's site will not have any official purpose fo the MDIA, but we're very fortunate that his focus will continue to be coverage of the MDIA.
