Now that the Greater Washington Sports Alliance has lured the NCAA "Frozen Four" hockey championship to D.C, in 2009 and 2010, it has its eyes on the next big prize.
The alliance says it's exploring bids for the NCAA Lacrosse Championships in 2009 and 2010, as well as the Army-Navy football game in 2010. Both events could be held at a variety of sites, including Fed/Ex Field or RFK Memorial Stadium.
D.C. has never hosted either event. The Army-Navy game historically has been in Philadelphia, but also has been played at the Meadowlands in New Jersey and in Baltimore, which hosted the game in 2000.
Alliance officials say they've made no decisions yet on whether to bid for the two events.
"This is just the research phase," says Sports Alliance President Bob Sweeney. "Real numbers and public interest is important to the board members and the organization."
