they might have over-looked that online poker isn't a sport.

Explaing that to ESPN. I noticed that they have Big Time Poker on their schedule (or some such show dealing with the game). Maybe they are catering to the extreme indoor enthusiasts???

really thought SI had turned a corner with their article on the growth of lacrosse but this week's issue shows they are back to the status quo. I think they really dropped the ball in their coverage of NW's national championship. Granted it's women's lacrosse and women's sports only get lip service in SI but you're telling me that a program winning its first national championship 4 years after it's inception doesn't warrant more coverage than oh say, online poker? Northwestern winning its first national championship in any sport since 1941 got a small box while online poker received a several page article.

The way you feel about online poker is probably the way most feel about the lacrosse article a few months back...NO ONE CARES especially since it is women's lacrosse. SI was just doing their duty as a Sports magazine to write an article about lacrosse. They did that for the year to make the SMALL AMOUNT of lacrosse enthusiasts happy. What more do you want? I think it was more publicity than the sport deserves right now compared to football, baseball, and basketball. Give you guys an inch, you want a mile...TYPICAL!

If I said yes, would that be a contradiction?

I believe I addressed this in my original statement.

I strongly disagree that no one cares about women's lacrosse while acknowledging that it is a fringe sport. Regardless, a good journalist should be interested in the a good story and I believe that Northwestern's qualifies, that was my point. And please do not come at me with more people care about online poker because it is not a sport regardless of what ESPN and SI think. Did I expect a full length right up on the women's game? Absolutely not and I don't think my original statement gave that impression. Now on Wednesday we shall see if SI follows ESPN's lead and gives the Final Four the coverage that this past weekend's outstanding lacrosse deserves. And that, at least to this SI subscriber, is more interesting than early season baseball, the basketball playoffs, or whether ricky williams is going to play this year.

Sorry man maybe you are interested in women's lacrosse, but i can garuntee you that the women's coverage is the least of SI's concerns. And, the vast majority of readers would rather hear about ricky williams in tibet or wherever than northwestern and their womens teams. SI pleases the majority, sorry you arent in it.

AMEN! That's part of the problem with a lot of things. THe minority is taken too seriously. Please the majority and the rest will fall into place. SHUT UP MINORITY!

I guess by using NW's national championship as an example I confused some of you as to my main point which is that while SI wrote a great article on the growth of lacrosse, they only pay lip service to the sport's premier event. When I made my original posts, I expected at least a one page article on what was perhaps one of the greatest championship weekends ever and SI came through by giving as much coverage to lacrosse as they do to the national eating championships.

For smaller sports, it usually takes some sort of human interest story to garner attention from the national media. ESPN saw fit to do a halftime piece on Kyle Harrison and his father in a story that I think is custom made for the pages of SI. Again, I think the editors of SI dropped the ball.

Telling me to shut up because I'm in the minority is both insulting and a disservice to lacrosse players everywhere. I've been playing this game for 15 years and watched as it has exploded around the country. In every new state, it has taken someone who was unwilling to listen to the majority and worked to start a lacrosse team. If lacrosse is going to continue to be the fastest growing sport in the US, then it will take more of that spirit and none of this "Shut up Minority!" complacency.

I think you missed Bentiss' tongue sticking WAY in his cheek! He was making the point that in many areas of our society (not just lacrosse), minority rights are trampled on under the guise of majority rules. You can also see examples in religious intolerance, or politicians claiming a "mandate" when they barely win an election.
I'm sure that Bentiss was not telling you to shut up Stryker! It would be an ineffective request anyway! :)

If it was in fact tongue in cheek, then I apologize...it's amazing that I was able to stand on my soapbox for so long before my coffee kicked in. Or as Monty Burns would say, "Ah, Monday morning. Time to pay for your two days of debauchery, you hungover drones."

Thank you for expounding, laxfan25...I was obviously too lazy to do so in the first place.

I would think that the Morgan State "Ten Bears" would make an excellent piece for Sports Illustrated, and very much along the lines of what they like to do in their in-depth articles. It is similar to when Texas Western (UTEP) defeated Adolph Rupp and the Kentucky Wildcats for the NCAA hoops championship way back in 1966. A historic event if ever there was one, and SI recently did a "where are they now" piece on the team.
Morgan State knocking off Washington & Lee was another groundbreaking moment. The tie-in to Kyle Harrison being Player of the Year, and the increased exposure of lacrosse to the minority community are also great aspects of the story.
Do you know any SI writers to suggest it to?
