Lacrosse Featured in Sports Illustrated Article

BALTIMORE — Lacrosse is the subject of the main feature article in the latest issue of Sports Illustrated, which will hit newsstands beginning on Wednesday, April 20. The article, "Get on the Stick," was written by Sports Illustrated senior writer Alexander Wolff and includes special reporting from Julia Morrill.

The main feature article also includes a number of sidebars, including "The New Breed" chronicling Colorado’s statewide interest in the sport and "Warrior Culture" looking at technology in the sport. The entire package on lacrosse covers nine pages and includes several quotes from US Lacrosse Executive Director Steve Stenersen.

Johns Hopkins sophomore attackman Jake Byrne appears in an inset photo on the cover, which highlights the National Basketball Association playoffs. The picture carries the caption "The Fastest Growing Sport in America."

Sports Illustrated reaches an audience of 20 million adults each week.

US Lacrosse, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is the national governing body for men's and women's lacrosse.

No one merely likes lacrosse; rather, people are divided into those who love it and the benighted masses who haven't yet been introduced to it. The love is perhaps most evident in the nearly 300 men's and women's club teams on college campuses, where players pay to play, sometimes up to $3,000 a year. Many club squads are so-called virtual varsities, with dazzling uniforms and national schedules. At Cal the main lacrosse fund-raiser -- a laxathon in which players take turns keeping a ball going on the quad for 100 hours -- doubles as a pageant of the players' devotion.

Wade, thats a really cool story. It's very true what you say about lacrosse. What a great game.

I love how lax is getting so much attention now. Now that hockey is gone, I can actually watch both pro and college teams on my t.v.

Props to SI for writing a story about it.

Maybe we could express our thoughts to SI directly via email? I'm sure it would be re-assuring to them to know how apprectiative the lax community is of this latest, and best, attempt at bringing lacrosse into mainstream sports.

There are a few minor errors, but overall it is very positive for lacrosse and very well written. I was interviewed a couple of months ago by Alex Wolff for this article (he didn't end up quoting me, but some of the information came from our talk). I wrote him an email yesterday expressing my thanks for what I thought was a very well done article. He got right back to me. Good guy. (One of my best friends covers the NFL for Sports Illustrated, and told me that Wolff is considered one of their best writers.) He lives in Vermont and plays basketball a few times a week with Middlebury coach Erin Quinn, which is part of the reason the article happened.

Now to make sure it gets in front of our athletic director...

I would suggest writing a letter to the editor, which I bet you can do online at their website. I'd love to see a big lacrosse response in that section in the next week or two.

I was walking down the street with my lacrosse stick and my headphones on, and a gas station attendant started waving at me to get my attention. I took off my headphones and he yelled at me "Lacrosse! The fastest growing game in America! It's in the latest Sports Illustrated!". I was taken off guard and wasn't sure how to respond, but managed to stammer "Yes, sir. It is." before walking away. Apparently, the SI article has driven lacrosse to the forefront of the gas station attendant market.

And that is where the grassroots campaign shall begin.

On pages 60 and 61 of SI, I found it interesting to notice the tactics used by Navy and Syracuse when they were going after a loose ball. I am sure some of you can recognize the tactics by Navy in that picture. It is the same with the women's side where two Princeton laxers were chasing Amy Appelt when her teammate was running behind her. I like the Navy-Syracuse picture the best as if they were off in the races.

Totally off the point, is Shaq's neck always like that? Crooked on the left side.

Shaq's neck isn't crooked, it's an optical illusion becuase he's so freakin big.
