Teams Going Varsity

Not gonna be easy to convince teams to come to Clinton, SC just to steamroll to a 20-2 victory.

Not true.....many teams are looking for competition in the south. The weather alone is the only incentive/advantage they need to entice teams to come. Lacrosse is dominated by cold climate teams that are looking to add flexibility to their schedules.

Looks like the next Div I team will be Pressler's Bryant. This would probably explain why we haven't seen his name in the mix for the last two big jobs - Harvard and Lehigh.

And as a native Rhode Islander this talk has been going on forever, but no official word yet. However Bryant does have a solid football program which would be a definite key. On a side note, Brown has a fall ball scrimmage vs. Bryant next week, i.e. Pressler vs Seligman, should be interesting.

They had a rough road playing non-varsity teams...

They don't seem to be doing "D1 Caliber" recruiting (in terms of numbers)...going by their website at least.

I hear ya.....I definitely wasn't expecting all of their games to be "non-counters". Even Robert Morris who got into the Colonial Conference and Bellarmine with the Great Western struggled with home games their first seasons. RMU struggled more and I think they had 2. Bellarmine had at least 5 or 6, and they're in KY. Granted, geographically they are much closer.

Ultimately I guess we'll have to wait and see. The Bryant jump decision I've heard from multiple respected sources..... The timing is not difinitive though, from what I understand. Recently a few of thier recruits have said that Pressler is saying this as well. I checked and there is a discussion about this on Laxpower as well.

The MIAA (NCAA DIII) conference based primarily in Michigan is making moves towards sponsoring lacrosse, but talk at the conference level seems focused on women's with proposed non-championship status in 2009 and full varsity status in 2010.

With Tri-State & Adrian already fielding varsity teams there were verbal reports 2 additional schools are making plans, with 2 schools supportive and looking for formal approval, and 3 schools dealing with additional matters before committing. The vote by the MIAA Boards for inclusion or not will take place in both April & May.

Some schools have said they would not add women's without adding men's, so it's not totally un-great news.

I was under the impression that NAIA did not have a lacrosse league. That's not the case?

So are some schools happy with having a top ranked MCLA team? I mean are there teams out there that don't want to go varsity (NCAA) eventually? I hope the MCLA doesnt want to 'compete' directly with NCAA leagues. I know MSU would eventually like to go NCAA... and by that I mean the players currently would like to see an NCAA lax team there someday, not that It will happen before I turn grey

NAIA does not sponsor lacrosse. However, it is my understanding that schools like Davenport and Tennessee Wesleyan are funded and supported as a varsity program. I think this is how Lindenwood and SCAD operate as well. I think more and more NAIA schools are following suit to boost enrollment whether or not it is sponsored by the NAIA. I think a few other NAIA schools in Michigan plan to follow this path as well. I can only hope that our school follows suit in the future.

If the growth at the NAIA level continues to grow, it wouldn’t surprise me if it is eventually recognized and/or sponsored.

Add Chestnut Hill College to the list

Chestnut Hill College, a Catholic, liberal arts College in Philadelphia, PA, is seeking applicants for the 12-month, full-time position of Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach. The new NCAA Division II men’s lacrosse program will begin play in the spring of 2010. As such, the successful candidate will have demonstrated track record of successful recruiting. Anticipated start date is September 1, 2008.
