Rebuilding a team/program.....

Postby schelitzche on Tue Feb 13, 2007 9:32 am

Yes, we were extremely fortunate at UMD to have Rob Graff guide us but aside from being consulted over the phone many times, Rob was not living in Duluth and the captains and officers ran a good piece of team operations. What I would suggest is have a meeting with the top 4-5 guys (in your case maybe the entire team) and make a push to become more involved. One, get rid of the idiots. Don't deal with anything that gives you a bad image at school. Then plan to get the word out around campus. It may be a little late this year but have a free clinic, have a table in the commons area, do a fundrasier. Also in your case, promote the fact that no experience is necessary. Even at Duluth (at least when I played) we have new players out every year, some who had never seen a lacrosse stick. Some of them turned out to be All-Americans. All in all, if you have leaders in place who are dedicated and captains/officers who can control practices and keep it organized, you will start to build steam!

Good Luck

Thanks so much for the suggestions, support, and pm's that i have gotten. I am extremely grateful and would just like everyone to know that I am currently working on finding a coach hopefully, does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on how to look for coaches in areas that may be an hour to 3 hours away? How would I go about posting for coaches in these areas and get the word out there?

Also to all those that replied that the ego's should not be part of the team, I too feel the exact same way the only probelm is if I would try and rid the team of these players, I would be left with 11 players total, which some of those players cannot travel every weekend and injuries can always happen so unfortunately I cannot get rid of the bad attitudes but hopefully with a coach (if I can find one) that will all change.

I guess I will let the proverbial "cat of the bag" (I do not think it's that big of deal to let people know who I am or my school because we need the help) but I am Keith Obsheatz and the team is Western State College of Colorado located in Gunnison, CO.

-thanks for the help and support by the way
