Whats more important, hurting the guy or getting the ball? All sticks hurt when you slash someone. I can't recall ever thinking, "you know that last check on my hip tickeled, that must be the new soft alloy series that STX is making." I'll admit I tried to be "oldschool" in HS and had a crooked arrow, but the alloy's they have now are lighter and stronger. Lighter shaft equals faster checks and less recovery time after throwing a check, especially with a d-pole. I do see the benefits of practicing with one to gain strength, but maybe beating on your teamates with a wooden stick during the season isn't such a great idea. As for the theory that once you hit a guy with it he'll think twice before he drives on you again, I dont buy that. Any attackmen or O-middie worth his salt will take it to the rack reguardless. We've all been slashed and hit before and it's going to happen again as long as we keep playing so a wooden shaft wont faze most guys. Plus anytime you have to pick yourself up or watch the defender walk to the box after a goal its way sweeter(if thats a word).

While i know that wood shafts do hurt more, I dont want to break it back out for that purpose. I noticed while using it in the off season that while your checks are slower, each one made more of an impact and would jarr the ball loose more often. Also when clearing the ball, the weight of the wood would seem to shed off the feeble attempts of those pesky attackmen.

Not since Navy '86. First goalie I ever saw score a goal.

If wooden shafts gave you any advantage then you would see all the top guys using them. You would see them in the MLL, but the fact is that if you are playing against a good attackman a hard hack isnt going to stop him. The key to defensive checks is keep your feet in good position while throwing the check, and it becomes harder to do so if you have to swing a heavy wooden shaft at a guy. There is a reason sticks are evolving away from wood.
You know something that would really make me applaud? A guy gets stuck in quicksand, then sinks, then suddenly comes shooting out, riding on water skis! How do they do that?!

I gave the wooden shaft a try one season in goal. I went to wood because I was bending the butt of the shaft banging it on the pipe to check position. It was noticeably clumsier when trying to move quickly...I think it lasted about half the season before I switched back.

I only really see wooden shafts being a great training tool. It seems most of the other posts talk about people getting hurt, or "bruised" more then necessary. If you need wood to get the ball loose, why don't you just go to the gym instead...

Someone was talking about Red Devil earlier, they sell on eBay all the time just look up wood lacrosse.

I always thought these were great for X attackmen, they could dish some pain back out on the D.

The ones sold on eBay are crap. A d-pole on my team had one last year and shattered it in the first game he played with it. They aren't made very well and out of crappy wood.
