I think he is already on scholarship. Lindenwood is a varsity program & offers athletic aid. If I am wrong correct me but this is what I was told.

They are not on Athletic Scholarships.... This is a discussion that has been exhausted

Well, I don't know for sure. But it would be highly unusual for a USLIA team to be anything but a club, and my understanding is that no MDIA teams offer scholarships. I mean, if you're going to be varsity and give scholarships, why not be NCAA?

My mistake I just checked the Equity in Athletics Website they have no athletic aid. I'll keep my mouth shut for a while.

Let me know when Lindenwood wins a championship and Combs dominates the game and then we can talk about who is goign to cover him.

Yes he is an awesome player, and they have sweet uni's.

actually, a team could be in the MDIA and have scholarships- the school could be a NAIA school which does not have lacrosse as a varsity sport yet they fund the program through their athletic program. I think SCAD might be going down that road.

I'm really tired of this fallacious argument. Lacrosse is a team sport; you could be the best player in the world and never win a championship if you don't have the right people around you. There is a long list of fantastic players that never won championships because they didn't have a great team. How many championships did Barry Sanders, Reggie Miller, Dan Marino, etc. win?

Fallacious? Solid use, very solid.
By the way, Big Shot Bob Horry has 6 rings- and is thus the most incredible basketball player of our era, aside from Michael Jordan and Fred Hoiberg, of course.

Nice use of the thesaurus. I didn't mention a word about Lindenwood's national championships. Although, they were in the tournament this year, that is not a horrible point on your resume. I'm asking who can cover him next year. No one in his conference can. We'll see what happenes with their out of conference games. I'm hoping a trip to Provo is in order so Cam Archibald can try his luck.

Not agreeing or disagreeing with this statement, just have a question.

Have you ever seen a GRLC game between two GRLC teams? That's all I am asking.

If I remember the game right (Conf Finals) Hooper from Illinois did pretty good.

I would say Justin Hooper, especially for being injured, did an adequate job on Combs, anytime you lose 15-5, its hard to say anyone played extremely well. Next year I would imagine they would put one of the other returning defenders on Combs- Arendt, Gainey, or Fox- any one of those players are fully capable of playing with Combs if they are on their game. Heck maybe one of the few incoming freshman that play inclose will be in that position.

again good luck to Coach Stevens and the Illini next year

I'll give you anecdotal evidence from a personal experience from my sophomore year in high school when a sophomore 2-way middie took down a talented senior midfielder from a rival high school. At the time, the short stick midfielder managed to completely shut down the extemely talented player from a rival high school (the player being an all-american player in high school, an all-american in college and eventual D3 attackman of the year and player of the year and tewaareton candidate at Salisbury... i'll give you his name if you're that interested) because the sophomore was simply challenged by his coach to show how good he could be and to win a game that hadn't happened in about 10 years (winning or losing the game would have no effect on whether the team made the playoffs (complicated win percentage stuff going on whether or not the teams won or lost the games)). If you put someone with enough guts and personal determination on such a talented player, he'll at the very least shut off the kid and force the opposing team to change their gameplan. At the best, he will continuously stifle the kid, force him to give up the ball, and eventually by using his confidence, put his team on offense often enough to upset a strong team. I've seen it happen enough from middle school through post-collegiate play to say that it takes a very rare and talented player to overcome these kids thrown at them time and time again. There will almost always be someone on each team who when given the right circumstances, will completely and utterly pick a top player apart piece by piece, it's just up to the coach and teammates to properly motivate said player. I would say any decently athletic and motivated defensive-motivated to defensive-skilled player can stifle most of the top players on any day given the appropriate motivation. Welcome to my 2 cents. Who's got a looney to exchange?

Quality player

Postby stillwater killa on Wed Jul 13, 2005 11:43 pm

Justin Combs can ball. However, people seem to overlook the fact that he is a 24 year old freshman. We played against him in our first round game in the national tournament. He put in work, but he is not unstoppable. Good body defense and quality lifts and pokes can slow this kid down. By the way, Cameron Archibald is not a god. Despite what you may think, this kid is not omnipotent and he can be beat. I've seen it happen numerous times. Why don't all you pundits get our name changed to BYLIA if they're all so good? Just a thought.

Come on, at the very least, he will be shut off. That's pure poppycock for you to consider that at the very least, a great player will be shut off, that should be you the goal, not the mininum. You second point clearly likes conviction, it's asking far too much. "Not only is my boy with so much heart, capable of slowing down a great player, whom I presume to a Bergy boy, but he's always going to trigger the offense after each turnover against said amazing player."
You're better than that.

And to stillwater killer, look at my signature. You'll see my alliance with BYU is questionable at best. Don't be bitter towards the Cougars however. It's not their fault no one cared about Colorado this year.
