I'll have to disagree with you on this one. A university or college is not "pathetic" if it cannot reach D2/D3 status. For example, some schools (nearly 300) choose to be in the NAIA for their own reasons.

The NCAA is exploring Division IV to accommodate the disparity among D III schools. Not all schools share the same goals with regard to athletics at this level. Some would choose to compete in their own geographic regions while others would choose to be more competitive and compete nationally.

I believe this would be healthy for the NCAA and allow schools to compete on equal levels with regard to their size, philosophy, and goals.

Now if they wanted to take NAIA as Division IV, or JUCO...that would make sense. If a school is new and does not go NAIA and go NCAA...then they should most likely take their lumps like most new teams in the history of sports. But that's not the case. I will be as bold to say that if a team is winning then they wouldn't bump down to a lower division.

...then they should most likely reconsider their own philosophies and business practices. And I understand that not every school has money to throw around on sports...but if there's a full-time coach and are qualified for D3...I would expect his/her team to at least be winning...since that's his/her job and all.

Maybe if the schools took responsibility and fixed the problem, they wouldn't have to make a whole new division.

Last time I checked, if I messed up at work...I'd get canned...as opposed to corporate making a whole new division that is philosophically on my level.

FWIW, I just read in the paper that the NCAA is considering creating a D-IV because they have a great variety of school sizes in DIII and not all of the schools have the same philosophy with respect to athletics.

I would hate to see how pathetic an athletic program is if it cannot get D2/D3 status. Talk about "everyone gets a trophy". If their philosophy is that bad...they need to rethink having athletics.

Are they going to add whiffle ball and tug of war as new sports? Not 4-square though...doesn't meet Title IX reqs.

I wasn't referring to the population of D3. I was obviously referring to the NCAA creating a whole new division for teams with "different philosophies". So that's what I can say about my Atlanta Falcons this year? Instead of saying "they can't win games, and are terrible", I can just say that the organization has a "different philosophy" than the Pats?.

Sports are getting a little too PC.
