Sowell to coach Stony Brook men's lax

Leaving St. John's for Stony Brook:

Athletic director Jim Fiore has turned to an old friend to take over the men's lacrosse team at Stony Brook University. He hired Rick Sowell from St. John's, where the popular 42-year-old coach just completed his third season reviving the program. The team did not compete in the first of those three seasons.

At Stony Brook, Sowell will be reunited with Fiore, who chaired the committee that hired Sowell at Dartmouth in 1998. Sowell went on to win the Ivy League championship in 2003.

Seems he had been applying for other jobs as of late...I know he was after the Duke job...St. John's must be a pretty tough place to coach. Sowell from what I hear, having a former Lindenwood player play for him is very good at what he does, and very intense.

I played at camps that he was coaching at while he was an assistant at G'town and thought he was a great coach. Being a Urick disciple is a good thing.

St. johns is a great place to coach but recruiting will be easier because Stony Brook is more affordable. Unlike St. Johns, Stony Brook is a state school. Whoever takes over at St. Johns has a talented young team to work with.
