Nominations for next Riddell Team of the Week?

Postby Sonny on Sun Mar 26, 2006 10:50 pm

As the weekend draws to a close... Does anyone have any suggestions for the next Riddell MDIA Team of the Week Winner?

The polling week in question will conclude on Tuesday, Mar 28th. The winner will be announced on Fri, March 31st.

Thanks.

Sonny,

Can you give us a link back to the criteria for this poll?

I happy to announce that Riddell Lacrosse is sponsoring a new Team of the Week contest on USLIA.com for the remainder of the 2006 MDIA regular season.

I will solicit nominations each week via the USLIA.com message board and/or email from MDIA coaches, players, and fans. I will pick one MDIA program as the Riddell Lacrosse Team of the Week from all of the nominations I receive.

The primary criteria for selecting the Riddell Lacrosse MDIA Team are successful teams that "rise above the competition and elevate their game to a new level." Secondary considerations are MDIA teams that attempt to promote lacrosse and/or strive to preserve the integrity of the game.

The deadline for nominating a team each week is Tuesday evening at 9:00pm (EST). Nominations should be concise (100 words or less) and include game results from the past week of play for the team in question.

The winning team will be announced no later then Friday on USLIA.com and that program will receive a Riddell Lacrosse prize pack which will include one custom Riddell Lacrosse Helmet.

Special thanks to Riddell for sponsoring this new award and best of luck to all MDIA teams the rest of the season across the country.

I know many of you were focusing on the key games taking place in the A Division this week, but I’d like to draw your attention to a team in the B Division that deserves some recognition for their accomplishments this week.

After suffering their first loss of the season to League Rival and last year’s National Champions, San Diego, Claremont came back from their spring break determined to show that they are worthy of their place in the polls. To that end they strapped on their gear with grim determination, posting a decisive victory over #16 Western Washington (19-3) and defeating USC 11-6. The latter victory is especially significant since this is the first time in quite a while that the Cougars have bested the Trojans.

For these reasons I would like to nominate the Claremont Cougars for the Riddell MDIA Team of the Week.

St. Edwards University,
With no support from the school, and not even being able to use any of the other available resources that many other school have, such as a main field, trainer, weight room, or even funding from the school. The Hilltoppers have put together an impressive season. After losing a close game to #20 Southwestern (8-6), they got back to work and won their next game against #21 Trinity (10-5). With a very young team and zero support from the school the hilltoppers have been impressive this year and will continue to be a dominate force in the LSA-B Division

Not trying to down on them because that sounds like a pretty good job rebounding, but im pretty sure a large number of schools are in a similar situation. I know several arent on their school's main fields, several have to supply their own trainer, athletes are only able to use weight rooms available to the entire student body and several dont receive funding from the schools from what I understand. Granted that some of the more promantent schools have some of these benefits, but this doesnt sound so out of the ordinary. But I may be wrong, as I frequently am.

ya thats true, i just find it odd that schools wouldn't support their teams or at least use their trainers if they get injured during play

I'm not sure if it's an issue of 'not supporting' their team, or simply not having the resources. UWEC is a school of 12,000 max, and funding for club sports is a vicious fight, even for personal trainers. Every team on the docket is vying for money, from Figure Skating to Soccer to Lacrosse. Especially at a public school like UWEC, it's not uncommon to find little support from University executives for funding, let alone field time and trainers. Each team is grateful for what they can get, it's just up to them as to how they spend the money alloted for them. IMHO.
