Tuesday evening shocker from the D1 varsity world.....

Bucknell Stuns No. 1 Maryland in Double Overtime

Freshman Joe Mele Completes Hat Trick with Sudden-Death Goal

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman Joe Mele scored three goals, including the game-winning tally late in double overtime, to give Bucknell a stunning 7-6 victory over No. 1 Maryland on Tuesday night. Matt Baran had a big night in goal with 14 saves, seven coming in the fourth quarter and overtimes, as the Bison defeated a No. 1-ranked team for the first time in school history.

Last season, Bucknell upset the nation's second-ranked team, Navy, in overtime at home. On Tuesday the Bison were coming off a 9-5 loss to No. 4 Navy in San Diego, and despite the short turnaround after a cross country trip, they played their best game of the year against a national powerhouse that made it to the Final Four a year ago.

Maryland (3-1) had already beaten three ranked teams this season in Georgetown, Duke and Towson, and the Terps had never lost to Bucknell in seven previous engagements.

The Bison (2-3) came out strong in this one, outshooting Maryland 13-4 in the first period and 21-12 in the first half. Trailing 1-0 just over 10 minutes into the game, Doug Buckley and Mele scored back-to-back to give the Bison their first lead of the night.

With the score tied at 2-2 in the second period, Perry Menzies scored with a man advantage off a John Togneri assist, and three minutes later Kirk Klett beat goalie Harry Alford, and the Bison took that 4-2 lead into the locker room.

Xander Ritz scored his 11th goal of the season to open the second-half scoring, but Bucknell was again able to bounce back and extend its lead. Mele's second of the night came just 42 seconds after the Ritz marker and made it 5-3, then the Bison EMO unit struck again with Matt Castele finishing a Tommy Moore feed for a 6-3 cushion.

Maryland made a furious comeback in the fourth quarter, when it outshot Bucknell 14-1 and tied the game on consecutive goals from Brendan Healy, Bill McGlone and Ritz, the last at the 4:40 mark. Baran made a big save on Ritz with 1:43 left to keep it a tie game and send it to sudden death.

The Terps outshot Bucknell 5-0 in the first four-minute overtime period, with Baran rejecting a Healy shot with 2:42 left. Bucknell did have a possession with about a minute remaining, but Maryland was able to force a turnover. McGlone's shot in the final seconds was blocked, and the Bison remained alive.

The Bison won the faceoff to start the second overtime period. Togneri had a good look with two minutes to play but it was turned aside by Alford. Maryland gained possession but turned it back over with 26 seconds left. Bucknell cleared, and with nine seconds to play Mele took a pass from Mark Lane and potted the biggest goal of his young career.

It was a stellar night for the Bison defense, which held the Terps to a season-low six goals. Senior defenseman Michael Abou Jaoude led the team with six ground balls.

The victory also proved to be a milestone night in Bucknell's youth movement, as freshmen accounted for five of the seven goals while another tally came from a sophomore who is in his first year in the program.

Maryland finished with a 37-31 shot advantage and a 37-22 edge in ground balls. Bucknell, which won only 1 of 17 faceoffs in Saturday's loss to Navy, was much better in that department against the Terps. The Bison won seven draws, while Maryland controlled 11.

Bucknell was 2-for-5 with an extra man and killed all four Maryland EMO chances.

The Bison will look to build off this milestone victory on Saturday afternoon when it travels to Worcester, Mass., to take on Patriot League rival Holy Cross at 1:00 p.m.

That is definitely an eye-opener about the Terps losing to Bucknell in double OT, 6-7. The Terps are now 7-1 against Bucknell. Knowing one of our USLIA members, Noah Fink (Head Coach, University of Texas) will probably be smiling when he hears about his alma mater, Bucknell upsetting Maryland. I am sure there are other Bucknell alums in the USLIA ranks.

Excerpted from http://umterps.collegesports.com/sports ... 06aaa.html

Game notes:

With today's 7-6 loss in double-overtime Maryland is now 7-1 all-time vs. Bucknell.

With a goal and two assists Joe Walters extended his point scoring streak to 37 games.

Walters now has 43 multi-points games in his career.

Walters is now alone in fifth place on Maryland's all-time goal scoring list with 122.

Xander Ritz extended his point scoring streak to 21 games with two goals and two assists.

For Ritz, his four-point game raises his career multi-point total to 34.

Healy's two-goal game marks the 13th multi-goal game and 21st multi-point game of his career.

When Walters and Bill McGlone score goals in the same game Maryland is now 25-10.

Obviously a surprise, but I thought Bucknell looked very good against Navy on Saturday night. They were only down one, 5-4, going into the break. A 9-5 loss to Navy seemed pretty respectable, especially considering the way Navy controlled the face-offs (I think Wallace was 15-17).

Any word on the young man from Bucknell that appeared to have broken his leg? CSTV was sure to include a couple graphic replays.

I was wondering about him as well. I didnt catch the actual injury until their last replay, I dont think they quite figured it out either.

As best I can tell, the young man is named John Schlicher and he broke both bones in his lower leg. He's had a rod inserted into his left leg. Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

moral of that story-don't hit Dingman, two guys did on that play, and both went down. Dingman walked away. Big kid.
