Wednesday: Syracuse Police To Probe Incident Involving Niewieroski, SU Lacrosse Player

Syracuse police will investigate an incident last weekend in which Syracuse University (and former Watertown Cyclone) lacrosse player Greg Niewieroski was injured.

Niewieroski was in good condition Wednesday at University Hospital. He was scheduled for surgery Tuesday.

Niewieroski's mother, Shari, told 7 News sports director Mel Busler Monday night that Niewieroski was attacked as he ran to catch up to a friend.

Shari Niewieroski said four people assaulted her son, spraying him with mace and kicking and beating him.

Niewieroski suffered broken bones in his face. He will likely be out for the remainder of the season, but will be red-shirted to preserve his eligibility.

Syracuse police said Wednesday the incident occured in the parking lot of a bar on Adams Street.

Police said the incident took place early Saturday.

Pro lacrosse players stabbed during fight in downtown S.J.

Two San Jose Stealth professional lacrosse players were stabbed after a fight erupted as they walked from a downtown bar early Sunday morning.

The players, who were not identified by police or the team, suffered minor wounds and were released from the hospital Monday, said Ken Arnold, spokesman for Silicon Valley Sports and Entertainment, the Stealth's owner.

San Jose police spokesman Enrique Garcia said the players were at the Britannia Arms pub on Santa Clara Street when a stranger walked by and pushed into them. One of the players said something to the man. The man allegedly spit in the player's face.

Then the bar's bouncer kicked the spitter and his friends out, Garcia said.

Shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday, the players left the bar and were heading east on Santa Clara Street when they encountered the same group of men, Garcia said. The players ignored them. But as they were walking away from the group, they heard people running after them.

The players turned and were confronted by eight men. In the ensuing fist fight, the players were stabbed.

They did not see any weapons.

``They didn't realize they had been stabbed right away, but that's common,'' Garcia said. ``You're adrenaline is so high.''

Police are expected to release suspect sketches soon.

That is really incredulous to read about those guys confronting and stabbing those laxers who did the right thing to ignore them and go on their business after leaving the bar.

However, shouldn't the journalists or their editor double check their spelling? I would assume that they would have meant "Your," not "You're adrenaline..." Sorry to be nitpicky, but that just came right out of that page when I was reading the story.

Adams street can get a shady at night-but it's mostly college kids. Go over a couple a couple a blocks and then you're asking for trouble.

We had a player get randomly jumped in the fall. I don't mention this to imply that Lacrosse players are getting jumped more that the average person, but more to imply that violance seems to be increasing as a whole in college towns.

It's a sad reality.

Considering that's seemingly unrealistic for our new generation of invincible young men, at least stay together. I wonder what would have happened had there been just one person, as opposed to a group of pro lacrosse players?
