I know tortillas come from UCSB but what is the history behind the tradition?

Maybe next year, Santa Barbara fans will ring cowbells.....Naw it'll never happen. Gauchos are cowboys, but not farmers.
I think the tortilla throwing has to do with the latin nature of their mascot, the Gaucho, which is an Argentine cowboy. Their song is Ole, Ole, Ole which is also latin. So they started singing and throwing tortillas at the D1 basketball games.

I don't think it came from UCSB. We have been throwing tortillas for touchdowns at my high school football games for at least 20 years now. I don't think it started at my high school either. Its just a natural projectile to bugger opponents.

Yes, UCSB's tortilla tradition came from UCSB, not your high school.

I think UCSB lacrosse might have a tradition of it but a lot of schools do this. Texas Tech is another team in the past that use to do this until the Big XII stopped them from doing this or they got flagged. I remember going to a Tech-SMU football game at Texas Stadium after they were told to stop so a lot fans were throwing the lids to Lemon Chills during the game, was sort of funny.

It is a cool tradition for UCSB. I like it. I just don't know if the first tortilla fired upon a field of competition was done so in Santa Barbara.
