Suggestion to Ease Archiving

Postby Andy Sharp on Thu Feb 24, 2005 2:32 am

I run several tournament websites and while they are busy for a week or so, not a full season, I have learned that incorporating the current year into the folder system makes managing an ever-growing site easier.

I usually do it at the root level as in:

www.uslia.com/2005/scores/

www.uslia.com/2005/polls/b/1.htm

Call me a picky web jackhole, but I like to be able to read the URL and have it make sense. Plus to be able to manually edit the URL, like changing 2005 to 2006 and be able to get the next year's info is really handy, I do it regularly on LaxPower.

One other tidbit I've taken advantage of, while one of my big sites is generated from a database, for pages that don't need to be generated on the fly every time I programmed to build regular HTML pages and commission a build when they need updating, that way they display quickly, are well indexed by search engines, and aren't as vulnerable to hacking (I hope).
