Team A is one man down and gains possession of the ball. The team A player clearing the ball is slashed by a Team B player and retains possession as time expires in the period.

Is Team A given possesion at the start of the next period or is there a faceoff?

Flag down denotes possession. Team A gets the ball at the start of the next quarter.

Nope. Since Team A was man down and Team B committed the foul, the flag down creates an even situation, so there is a faceoff. See:

NCAA Rule 4-3 wrote:Note 5: In the event of a flag-down that creates an all-even situation at the conclusion of any period, the next period will begin with a faceoff.

This has been clarified in the past few years.

However, in NFHS, Rule 4-3-1 Exception 1 dictates that a flag down at the end of a period confers possession to start the next period regardless of the penalty situation.

Thanks. I was always under the same interpretation as Sonny and always seen it called this way. The rules have so many examples of fouls after the period ends that I wanted to clarify that I was reading it right for that particular instance..
