What are the differences in college and hs rules? I just got a coaching job and dont really know the differences.

Specifically:

Face offs
Clearing (time)
Advance time

Also, I heard that even if you are 4 or 5 men down, you are allowed to have three defenders and a goalie playing MDD and allowed 3 attackmen. Is that true?

Depends on what area you are in. Some areas/states play NFHS (Federation Rules), some areas/states played modified NCAA rules.

When the sport is sanctioned by the state organization, most of the time - the schools have to follow NFHS rules.

I have two lists of the NCAA-NFHS rules differences that will be posted on the US Lacrosse MDOC Resources Pages shortly, but if you PM me with your e-mail address I can send them to you now. There's a short list with the most important differences (1 page with 28 differences) and a long list with all known differences (4 pages, 98 differences).

On your first three items, the NCAA and NFHS rules are the same, except on faceoffs in NCAA, they're not supposed to be touching the line at all, and there is no SET call after the DOWN call.
Clearing and advancing rules are the same - 20 to clear, 10 to get it into the box.

On multiple penalties:
NCAA has a "stacking" rule - if you have 4 men with penalties, only three can be in the box at any one time, so you're never more than 3 men down. The fourth penalized person has to come out of the game, but he sits on the bench until one of the other penalties expire, and then he begins serving his sentence in the penalty area.

Under NFHS rules, if you have 5 men penalized, they all serve their time concurrently. You have to have 3 men in the attack area, the balance of the squad can then play D.

Same. 20 seconds to midfield, 10 seconds to get it in the box, 4 seconds for the crease.

Based on what I have heard from last years games, the officials seem to listen call the games NCAA. I was told there is no 4 inch box, there is no set (FO) and man down is always allowed 3 attack and 3 D.

I asked the head Bham ref what rules we follow, he stated NFHS. The statements above contradicts the rules of the NFHS. If the officials make an error on the field, what is my best way of telling them they are not calling the game to the rules we are "supposed" to follow? Should I approach before the game to clear some things up? What about incorrect rulings or calls during the game?

You can challenge any rules application using rule NFHS 7-13. However, I would suggest having the league contact the officials to make sure they understand the NCAA-NFHS rules differences. If they don't know the rules, complain to the league about them.

Your final statement seems a bit confrontational to me.

Sounds as if his questions should be directed to his league. And that the league should resolve what rules are being used with the officials & coaches BEFORE game day. It sounds as if the new H.S. "league" might be disorganized or underdeveloped, so these issues need to be worked through.

Also note that challenges to NFHS rule 7-13 must be specific to a rules application not a judgment call and not a mechanics issue.

I don't see what's confrontational. If you have officials who don't bother to figure out what rules are to be used in the high school games, that's a valid complaint, and complaining to the league is likely to get the situation cleared up faster than complaining to the two officials who don't think they need to know the difference between NCAA and NFHS rules.
Furthermore, I suggested this AFTER I suggested having the league contact the officials regarding the situation, indicating that it was a nex step.

I specifically mentioned the application of a rule; I was hoping he'd actually go read 7-13 for details.

the only difference i saw was in private school league in nc there were horns on the endline [it was wierd]

has this been posted yet? if not could you email that? I start reff'ing HS games on Wednesday and need a quick refresher.
