Trophy honors fallen official before men's lacrosse clash
It's been almost a year since Lutherville resident Scott Boyle died of a heart attack while officiating a men's lacrosse game between Georgetown University and the U.S. Naval Academy.
When the teams meet again April 1, Boyle's widow, Becky; son Scott, and daughter Kelly will be on hand to present the Scott Boyle Memorial Trophy to the captain of the winning team.
The trophy presentation will become an annual part of the series between the schools.
There was also a brief ceremony honoring Boyle before the Towson University-University of Virginia men's game March 19, with 18 members of the Southern Lacrosse Officials Association in attendance.
"The officials are like a second family to me," said Becky, who was presented game jerseys by Virginia Coach Dom Starsia and Towson Coach Tony Seaman.
Boyle was a graduate of then-Towson State College and had a great rapport with both coaches. He was the type of official coaches appreciate for his even-handed - if sometimes theatrical - approach to his job.
