MCLA elgibility rules a year off

Postby bhsvideodad on Thu Mar 06, 2008 10:50 pm

A player plays his freshman year for an MCLA team. Sophomore year he plays fall ball, but is injured before the spring season games begin. If he doesn't play as a sophomore, does he have 3 years elgibility remaining or 2?

I was under the impression that if the player is placed on an official Spring roster with any college sponsored team that that player has used a year of eligibility. I grew up in the CCLA though. Tim do you represent the MCLA's stand with that comment?

that sounds right. He wasn't on a spring roster for any games, why would he lose a year? Fall Ball is off-season.

This wouldn't apply to a past situation but I believe the rules were amended this year to allow a player who is injured in the first 3 games (I might be off on the number) of the regular season to sit out the rest of the spring and not lose any eligibility.

Roster

I agree in that situation he is correct. I guess I was just trying to tweak the subject a little. What if the player had chosen to play some games for the local college club, not affiliated, with our leagues? Is he allowed to roster for them and still get that year back with our team? The subject has come up in Michigan as we have a few independent teams where noncommitted guys will play, they then may get recruited to a school/team in our league and they have some good experiences under their belt. They then have more college time to play. The experience is great, but the point of eligibility should be to even out the game amongst all teams. This is reminding me of Junior Hockey type stuff.

From the FAQ..... key part is bolded.

What are the eligibility rules for MCLA players?

MCLA eligibility rules are based on simplified NCAA eligibility rules. For a player to be eligible for MCLA competition, he must::
1. ... have played no more than four years of college lacrosse. A year of college lacrosse is defined by playing for, or appearing on the roster for, any college team (MCLA, varsity, NCLL, or independent club) during the spring season.
2. ... be a full-time (defined as at least 12 credit hours in that term) student at the MCLA institution he is playing for.
3. ... be defined as a student "in good standing" by his academic institution. This definition varies from school to school.
4. ... appear on the official roster form for his MCLA team.
5. ... not have played professional lacrosse.
