Clarification on subject

Postby Rudyfan on Tue Apr 11, 2006 11:53 am

In the ASU/UCSB game on Sunday, a Gaucho player scored on a rebound. It was discovered after the play that the ASU goalie had broken his stick during the activity just prior to the score. The play was never whistled dead. After the play, the refs huddled and after much discussion, negated the goal and gave the ball to the Sun Devils. Right call?

I'll rephrase to correspond to forum guidelines:

I'd say that disallowing the goal is the right call. The rule says play was supposed to be stopped, so we appeal to:

NCAA Rule 7-12 wrote:When a timekeeper, scorer or official makes a mistake that would result in a team or player being penalized and another official becomes aware that a mistake is being made, that official shall promptly correct the mistake. If goals are scored during the mistake made by the timer, scorer or an official and it is brought to the attention of the referee before the next live ball, the referee must allow or disallow the goal, depending on the circumstances.

(Although I do feel a bit uncomfortable calling this an official's error, since it's hard to spot a broken stick sometimes, they are technically responsible for stopping play, so it is technically an error.)

Now, as to the awarding of the ball: as part of this "correcting the error" process, I would say that team A had the ball when the stick was broken, so team A should have possession. However, this is an easy thing to get wrong what I'm sure would be a hectic situation.

going back to the glove issue...Lets say GK from Team A takes the ball out of his crease in order to clear the ball, then gets checked by Team B and loses his glove in the process, is play immediately whistled dead, even if Attackmen from team B has gained possession immediately and has a fast break opportunity?
