Tinted Eye Shields
What is the rule on having tinted eye shields, I have seen a couple of players in HS with them, are they legal? My guess would be no, unless they have a medical reason.

From the NFHS rulebook, under prohibited equipment;
ART. 10 . . . No player shall wear an eye shield that is not clear, molded and nonrigid.
Related Case Study -
1.10.10 SITUATION B: During the game: (a) A1 is discovered to be wearing an eye shield, which is reflective, or (b) an entering substitute of Team B has a dark eye shield.
RULING: In (a), the player must leave the game until he is legally equipped. In (b), the Team B substitute will not be allowed to become a player, and he will be ordered to leave the field and not re-enter until he is legally equipped.
I am fairly certain there is no medical exception for HS.
The NCAA book has this -
A plastic face shield as part of the helmet may be worn, provided the face shield is completely clear. A tinted eye shield may be worn only for a documented medical condition.

Correct: no exception under NFHS rules. It can be a medical exception under NCAA rules; my understanding locally is that the CAA is supposed to notify us if there's a player who has a medical exemption, and I think there's only one such player in our conference.

Ok so how is it safe for football players to get them? Concussions are quite common in football and lots of players have them.

There's a lot of stuff about football that doesn't cross over to our genteel sport. Watching and hearing Charlie Weis on the sidelines at Notre Dame - I don't think they have the point of emphasis on language in football either!

Haha...football players get tinted masks to block out Charlie Weis. That is awesome!
Seriously tho. Football is without question more contact-based than lacrosse....with much more neck/spinal injuries. Yet they wear masks.
Oh I completely forgot...it's because the (Cascade, Riddell, etc) helmets we pay $150-$200 (or $115 ) are overpriced and NOT protective. Ill take my CCM hockey helmet and a 100mph puck to the head, followed by a faceplant into the boards anyday over the cheap crap we all have to wear.
