MCLA officials wearing numbers on jerseys?

Postby Sonny on Fri Jan 19, 2007 6:15 pm

I've heard that officials working MCLA games will be wearing numbers ala varsity (USILA) games. What prompted this change?

I haven't heard of this. Maybe a need for better/more record keeping?

It's true. Small part of the contract negotiations this year. They want better evaluations from coaches, and one of the things that could help a little is having them wear numbers. For the times you don't know the crew working your game, it may be easier to remember a number rather than a name or a designation (umpire, referee, etc.).

Details of the contract will be released when it's all signed (any day now to finalize, but negotiations have been done for a while). Conference commissioners and CAA's already got all the important details, and they've been free for some time to release those to their member teams and to the general official population.

I think that's a great idea. Instead of fumbling around for the offcials card while inputting stats (since the same people receiving don't always input the stats) you can remember the numbers on the officials that stand out to more accurately evaluate their performance.
Falsehoods are well-told, so think for yourself...

Will the numbers go from 1-whatever nationally, or will they be duplicated by district, or do we know yet?

At the MDOC BOG meeting, they said that they'd go within district. Since there are about 800 COC officials, it would look a little silly to have the numbers going up to 788 or whatever.

Of course, that means that it's possible to have two guys in the same game with the same number, but that shouldn't happen often.

In Terry Cullen's presentation at the convention, he argued that the officials shouldn't be rated individually but as a crew. He said sometimes the coaches will vilify the official who made the tough calls but will give a good evaluation to the guy that passed on all the calls and made his partners call everything.

Possibly. I've seen that go both ways.
