OOC Holy War in Grand Rapids in 3/30-4/1

Two CCLA-B teams are looking for OOC teams interested in joining us for a religiously affiliated small college jamboree, since the above term is so non-pc. The early thought is that this would become an annual event that moves around to different locations. This year's event would be hosted by Calvin College and likely played on the turf fields of East Grand Rapids (the site of last year's CCLA tournament). We're looking to make it a bit more than just lacrosse with social gatherings and the hope of including women's teams as well.

This year we're shooting for 2 non-CCLA division B teams to join Calvin College and Taylor University for round robin match-ups. If the interest is there, expanding it to 6 teams is also a possibility.

Please send an email to andy at laxlinks dot com if your team might be interested.

A very unique, and interesting idea.

I look forward to it.

Andy a couple teams from the GRLC you might want to contact are Dordt, Creighton, and Wheaton just off the top of my head. Liberty in the SELC is also a faith based school. Harding is in the GRLC but that would be a hike and a half to get them up there.

Another faith-based school in the GRLC is Northwestern College.

I'm sure we are for whatever this event becomes. What's the new PC name for an event like this?

Oh, and I'll state this rule now, if we have any ties, we will be having sudden victory overtime periods.

Years ago Liberty used to attend this event and win it at Messiah College before Messiah had a varsity Team. It once was made up of Teams from the NCLL. You can contact Tom Metallo the Coach that toke over for me at Liberty University and his E-mail is tmetallo@liberty.edu .

Sounds like a great idea. Best of luck running this event.

All the best,

I too made a trip to Messiah for their Holy War back in '94 with the Calvin team.

We are still looking for OOC teams interested in playing, Taylor & Calvin will be ready and willing April 7/8.

Pacific Lutheran University may be an option for next season.

In case you didn't notice, this year's attempt has come up short. I figure it's best to start work on 2007 while we're all still thinking lacrosse.

I spoke with the Pacific Lutheran coach while in LA and he did seem to like the idea.

I've done a bit of Googleing and found a good number of possible teams:

Rank Conf Team-Affiliation
02 - UMLL - St. John's - Catholic
06 - UMLL - St. Thomas - Catholic
07 - GRLC - Harding - Christian
08 - CCLA - Calvin - Christian Reformed
10 - SELC - Davidson - Presbyterians
11 - GRLC - Creighton - Jesuit
12 - SELC - Eckerd - Presbyterian
13 - WCLL - Pepperdine - Christian
20 - PNCLL - Pacific Lutheran - Lutheran
21 - LSA - Trinity - Presbyterian
23 - SELC - Emory - Methodist
24 - SELC - Elon - United Church of Christ
28 - LSA - St. Edward's - Catholic
31 - GRLC - Dordt College - Christian Reformed
35 - UMLL - Bethel - Christian
35 - CCLA - Grove City - Christian
44 - PNCLL - Linfield - Baptist
XX - CCLA - Hope - Reformed Church in America
XX - SELC - Liberty - Baptist
XX - GRLC - Wheaton - Christian
XX - CCLA - Taylor - Christian
XX - CCLA - Dayton - Catholic

The likely host site (East Grand Rapids HS a mile from campus) has a chance of additional improvements, with the addition of a 3rd NexTurf field possibly by next Spring. The tournament would be held during the HS spring break to give us better access, this city basically leaves town for the week, so it would almost be free reign.

Let me know if any of your teams would be interested.

CCLA - DAYTON - Catholic

I know that our coaches traveled with a Bethel team in the early 90s to a Holy War...

and most definitely count Bethel in.

Wheaton would be interested in hosting something like this also. Great facilities, great guys, and Chicago is pretty centralized for the teams that I KNOW are interested.

An annual tournament for Christian schools would be a lot of fun for sure. We also threw around the idea of a floating trophy to go the winner each year... perhaps... the HOLY GRAIL!

ps is the term "Holy War" really politically incorrect??? I would actually be kinda disappointed if it wasn't called the "Holy Wars."

Would you guys be interested in coming up to MN this spring for something like this?

Bethel would be willing to host if we figured it all out this fall...

There is a possibility we will be going to So. Cal for spring break. If that works out, then the only way we would be able to participate in something like this would be if we hosted it.

Just a thought.

I hope you all haven't forgotten about this. It would be a shame. Could be a large quantity of fun.

After Blaine in mid-May, you may have trouble convincing them that this can be pulled off without looking like the Siege of Leningrad!

Ha. Who said lacrosse had to be played in sunny 72 degree weather?

Last May was absolutely miserable. But there is usually a really nice couple of weeks in late march, early april before it gets REALLY wet, but just like anywhere it is a crap shoot sometimes. I swear MN is not always like it was last May...
