Denver, CO – On the eve of training camp the Colorado Mammoth scored a major acquisition, signing heavily sought-after free agent Nenad Gajic on Friday to a one-year contract. The speedy, skilled transition player was originally a fourth-round draft pick (39th overall) in the 2004 National Lacrosse League entry draft by the San Jose Stealth, but became a free agent after sitting out the last two seasons to pursue his hockey career.

Gajic (pronounced Guytsch) has left the hockey team at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and will be with the Mammoth when the team opens training camp on Saturday. He played two seasons of hockey at Michigan State before transferring in 2004 to UNO, where he had two goals and five assists in six games for the Mavericks this season. Gajic, 23, is a senior at UNO and will remain in school to finish his degree in speech communication.

“We’re very excited about acquiring Nenad and getting to watch him make the transition from Division I hockey to professional lacrosse,” Mammoth general manger Steve Govett said. “So many NLL teams wanted him because he has great strength, speed and a tremendous amount of potential.”

Gajic, a 6-foot, 190-pound native of Burnaby, British Columbia, played for the Western Lacrosse Association’s New Westminster Salmonbellies last summer, tallying 10 goals and 12 assists in 22 games. He also had five goals and 11 assists in eight playoff games in his first season of senior lacrosse in Canada.

Interesting...the University of Denver has an incoming freshman, Illija Gajic, also from Burnaby...brothers I'd imagine?

Yep. There is another Gajic brother, Alex, also playing Junior A in Burnaby.
