ROCHESTER, N.Y. (CP) - John Tavares joined a very select group Saturday night.
Tavares had three goals and four assists to become just the second player to surpass the 1,000 career points plateau as the Buffalo Bandits defeated the Rochester Knighthawks 11-7 in National Lacrosse League action.
Tavares, 36, a Mississauga, Ont., high school teacher, has amassed 496 goals and 505 assists for 1,001 career points in 154 games. The only other player to surpass 1,000 career points is Victoria native Gary Gait, who played for the Colorado Mammoth.
But Tavares has the distinction of being the fastest player to reach 1,000 in pro lacrosse history.
